Question regarding personal medical history

Specialties CRNA

Published

I have a question on what type of restrictions are placed on student's personal health and the medications that are restricted. For example, I have heard that anti-depressants are frowned upon. The reason I am asking is that I take Adderall. I take the lowest mg (10) and am in no way addicted, but it is a controlled drug and used for the treatment of ADHD. I use it to help me concentrate for long periods of time (aka studying). I am in nursing school now and was just curious if this would be a problem in passing the medical checklist to get into CRNA school. Does anyone know?

Thanks

I haven't heard anything about this. I don't think that a policy that frowns on any necessary medical treatment is valid. How do they decide what medical ailments should be "frowned" on? Depression is treatable just like diabetes or any other diagnosis. I don't see how they can exclude you because of something out of your control. It's time that we stop believing that depressed people are weak people and see them as people who need treatment like everyone else.

Actually, the director of my program said that they have no right to your medical history. For instance I have diabetes and he said he could not use that in a decision making process. He did say the approprtiate question was"Do you have a physical or mental condition that would prevent you from doing the work?" I do know that some schools ask a general question like that and some have you fill out a detailed questionair with al sorts of physical parameters you must be able to accomplish. Only after you are accepted is a physical required.
