Question from pre-nursing student.

Published

Hello People,

I am a pre-nursing student. My dream is to work with pregnant women or newborn babies. I am looking for information pertaining to these careers.

My questions are:

1. Can I train specifically in Maternity / Pediatrics during my B.S Nursing degree? If yes, in which year of study do I declare Maternity / Pediatrics as my specialization?

3. If not, how do I specialize in Maternity / Pediatrics? Do I complete the B.S in Nursing, get the RN license and then specialize by taking jobs in Maternity / Pediatrics?

Do you kind folks have any advice / information for me?

Thank you.

Hey there, well Im into my second semester of nursing school now so I dont know everything about specializing, but from what my instructors have said you just get a general nursing degree (B.S), pass state boards, then get your job of your choice. Everyone goes thorugh the same classes and clinicals to pass the boards, and I've heard some offer electives of your choice. What you should look into are hospital internships for new grads or nurses wanting to change their specialty. The hospital will hire you as a nurse, but you'll go through the (paid) internship for your specialty for 6+ months, then youre ready to go. They also have summer internships you can get as a student nurse once you have at least one year of nursing school done. For example, I want to go into the OR, but I wont get specific OR training until I get hired on as an intern. Good luck with school.
