Do you need a Dr's order for Nasopharngeal suctioning?
Thanks!

In a word: ABSOLUTELY. It is an invasive procedure, therefore, an MD order is essential.

That's what I thought - checking the fundamentals bible right now!!!
Thanks MJL!
You're welcome!
MJL:
The bible states "obtain a physicians order if indicated by agency policy." So, you may not need orders -- it's dependent upon Hospital policy. Well, I'd better check my hospitals policy...Thanks!
I appreciate the info, but I'd still prefer to get an MD order to cover my assets, just in case anything hits the fan later. This doesn't mean that I let my patient choke on his or her own secretions until the doctor calls back so I can "officially" suction him/her, no way! But I do make sure to GET an order at some point, it's what I was taught, and the docs usually appreciate being consulted even though they know I've already started the suctioning.
