question about first day on the Job!

Published

i am a nursing student, and have recently been having the nursing jitters! i know that may sound weird!, OR maybe not!

thats what i want to know....

maybe some of you can help me!...what fears did you have about your first day on the Job, experiences, Etc?

I've been at it for 1.5 years and still sometimes get butterflies before going in at nite. This is a taxing job with REAL conseqences to mistakes. I used to have a nitemare (when I first started) that I forgot about one pt all nite long-no assessment/meds/vs-NOTHING. I'd wake up with my heart racing.

My DON would always ask me if I killed anyone yet. Don't know if she was watching me or trying to lighten me up.

((hug)) The philosophy here is, if you did not kill anyone you had a good day.

The reality is I could kill someone. Sofar I have not. So, sofar I have done well.

Yea, you do have to lighten up on yourself. Stuff happens. We are human. We make mistakes.

However, we need to keep the mistake in perspective and not make it into a diaster when all that really happened is the patient got a little extra sleep because we gave the wrong does of pain med.

Learn to forgive your own mistakes. By all means learn from them but don't beat yourself up.
