I just made a general post for the heck of it...If you MUST know the real details, I was required to work one hour b/f my shift and two hous after without pay...The nurse ed and manager knew about it as well and did nothing...THAT is why I say QMC=JOKE...I even reported them to the union...Nothing came from it...
I will post what I want when I want...Without any explanation...

This is simply not acceptable. You can address the issue with the Labor Relations Board if you feel you have been treated unfairly.

One hour BEFORE your shift?? Pardon me if I am a big aghast at this but....why were you even in a position to be "required" to work one hour BEFORE your shift??

There often is a question as to whether after-shift OT is justified but, IME, if you can justify it to the satisfaction of the NM there is no problem.

Thanks for the post!...I was to report to the floor one hour early to "research my pt's and to find out everything about them and what had been done b/f I got report"...The whole time, I was thinking...I am a RN with experience and no longer a nursing student that had to do a care plan...

So, I am happily back working in ICU planing to go to CRNA school...QMC just didn't do it for me for SO many reasons...From others comments, it is nice to have a job...But, it is unacceptable to work when your not getting paid...Kronos was not available...so I had to document my time on paper...Alteration on their part???

hey Pin did you go straight into ICU out of school? Did your facility take you on as a new grad (how was their orientation)

I've considered the CNRA route as well..

Yeah...Went into ICU for my first job as a new grad...and back at it again...I love it! Orientation was good...Just the basics...At least 15 classes and 8 wks with an ICU nurse...When I was out on my own, I quickly learned to ask A LOT of questions...I used my pda a lot as well to look up disease processes/drugs...

No CRNA schools in HI...part of the reason I left...@ my current facility, we loose at least 6-8 nurses a year to CRNA programs...5 schools in my state...

I'm really glad that I started out in the unit...I would not do anything else right now...It's hard work but very rewarding...

Ohhhh! You are not in Hawaii anymore (sorry I did not read back too far)

Yes, educational opps for grad school are limited on the island..I'm travelling back and forth between Hawaii and San Francisco right now , I'd like to continue on to grad school in the future too.

Did you first graduate and start working as an ICU nurse in Hawaii? (do you mind me asking which facility)

I've never had much interest in working med/surg but could probably be talked into a year of it to open doors for other specialties. I know the CRNA programs require a year in ICU, preferably 2 or 3 years. Am glad to hear that you like it. A good friend of mine is urging me to consider it. I shied out of nursing years ago (more like ran) because I worked long term care and felt it was impossible, and not safe, to care for 30 patients at a time (not acute but if you read our forum about med passes you'll get the drift).

If I had a choice today to pick where I wanted to be, it would be L and D, psych, OR/PACU :redpinkhe

no worries...i graduated BSN on the mainland and moved to my house in kapahulu and took boards in HI...no jobs to be found then...so i moved back to the mainland and started in the icu..moved back to HI for a floor job that sucked...

I would go ICU...MSICU for sure...for me at least...LOTS of exposure! Consider the mainland for a bit...HI is great, but the opportunities are better in cali etc...wish u luck!
