Public Health Commissioned Corps?

I am brand new to this thread and to learning about all of these different options. I find it all very interesting.

I am an ASN RN with 11 years experience, now in a Bridge program for my MSN, planning to become a Certifed Nurse Midwife. I will be in school 3 more years, but then... who knows!

I am 36 years old and married with 3 kids. Could these military options be feasible for me? I read the website for the Public Health Commissioned Corps and it sounds pretty good but I still don't exactly understand how it all works. If I "joined" (is that the right terminology?), how long do I have to do it? What about my family? Do they help my husband find work when we relocate? Once in, can you work until any age? What kind of work do they do? Is there any chance of actually getting sent to a "war-zone" situation, as an officer? How good is the retirement? Do they help pay off tuition loans? What about assistance with tuition for my kids when they go to college?

Like I said, I'm a real newbie with a million and one questions. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!!!

hello, and welcome!

I do not know much about the USPHS, but I do not think that they deploy to actual combat zones, but they do go on humanitarian missions abroad. Hopefully someone else here will be able to give you more informative answers.

You are in a great position to be exploring your options, as you have the time to really decide what is best for you and your family. In your search, do not overlook the opportunities afforded by the other services (Army, Navy/Air Force) they all have different programs, and some offer tremendous bonuses and benefits.

Best of luck to you, and keep us posted in your searching!

Thank you!

How do I go about learning about the different options/benefits/bonuses, other than reading these boards?

Is there a site or a section of the sites that detail this kind of info?

Thank you for your encouragement and info!

Each of the services have their own websites (sometimes you have to do some digging around to find exactly what you are looking for)

the Army's site is:

http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/nurse/index.jsp

I think they are offering the most bonuses right now, but that is always changing. That is the one I am familiar with, but check them all out.

also:

Sorry, I do not have sites for the other services handy, but a simple Google search should get you headed in the right direction...

good Luck!

I'm wondering if you ever got your questions answered re: PHS CC? I have the very same questions, and am looking for some insight. Please feel free to PM me if you have anything to offer!
