Pre-nursing student needs advice!!!!

Specialties Psychiatric

Published

I am currently a pre-nursing student and I would like to know any helpful hints on psychiatric nursing. What kind of classes would be good and how much school is involved? Also, what kind of volunteer work would be good? This field sounds so interesting. Any advice would be welcome!!!

Psychiatric nursing in the hospital setting--as a staff nurse--is considered to be a basic nursing role that a standard nursing course prepares you for. Within nursing it is indeed regarded as a specialty and whether a hospital unit would hire you, would depend on the hospital and nurse manager and your abilities. Still, hospital units do hire nurse aides at times. Psychiatric influences to care are all around us, no matter what domain, so be aware of those, too.

Good luck
