Inpatient Visitation Times

At the inpatient unit where I work the visiting hours are:

M-F 4 to 8 pm

Weekends & Holidays 10am to 8pm

I am curious what other inpatient units have as viistation times and some input into the pro's or con's of long or short times.

Our unit has weekday visiting from 1630-2030, weekends from 1130-2030. The other posted have identified some problems we've had, smoking on the unit, illegal substances brought onto unit, alcohol brought onto unit. But for the most part, visiting hours are a welcome break for pts. We do restrict visiting if the pt situation requires it.

I know this is a really old thread, but I wanted to bump it. The nurses on my unit (myself included) are interested to know the visiting hours on other units and pros/cons of them. Ours are 4-8:30 pm M-F, and 11 am-8:30 pm on the weekends. (Our geri-psych unit has open hours, that's more understandable, though.) We feel they are way too long. The visitors bring in ridiculous amounts of contraband and they usually upset the patients at some point. Plus, it's impossible to do any 1:1 with the visitors there. I know that a couple of other psych floors in our area have visiting hours that are an hour through the week and 2 hours through the weekend. What are your visiting hours?
