Psychiatric MSN Programs: Questions from a future applicant

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hello,

I am a current Sophomore in a BSN program (as a second degree). I am very interested in the field of Mental Health Nursing, and I currently work in a Psychiatric hospital as a Mental Health Worker. My long term goal is to apply to MSN programs in the field of Psychiatric Nursing. I have some questions for those of you who may already be in program, or anyone with information!

1. What is the difference between CNS and NP in Psych/Mental Health? If my goal is to be in private practice and prescribe, which is best?

2. What kind of activities will make me a competitive candidate for such programs? I am a member of the state Student Nurse Association, and I plan on applying for some scholarship as I progress in my program. Any other scholarship opportunities for Mental Health nurses out there?

3. My GPA Is a 3.6, but my first semester actually IN the nursing program has been very difficult and I think I may be looking at a GPA of 3.4 this semester. My GPA in my first degree was 3.0. Is it still possible to get into top schools in the northeast (ie Yale, BC) with such grades? Yale would be perfect because it's close and has an NP program, but I just don't know if I'll be a qualified candidate.

4. I am looking at several schools in the Mass, RI, CT area, as well as distance programs. I'm a single mom and can't go to far. Any good suggestions or resources?

A lot of questions, but I'm just starting out and I'm trying to get a good plan in place.

Thanks, I look forward to any input!

are you still wondering about those questions?

Yes, I certainly am! Any information or advice you have would be helpful.
