Sorry, in op's case I wasn't sure what a "checkered past meant." It could mean substance abuse or...but at any rate, some things I've read here have led me to believe that there are those who have had to take their histories (not talking health histories) up with the board. I would imagine it happens, but I can't offer advice on that issue other than to read those posts.

Unless it was criminal why would the BON be privy to that kind of information? They don't check your medical records....

I work at a psych Hospital and we frequently get RNs in as patients. At least in MI I haven't heard of anyone getting denial due to psych hx. They never paraded it out there either so I would be careful with that if I was you.

Great advice! I would also add that it may not be a good idea to consider a job in mental health. Dealing with patients' mental health issues could bring up things about your situation that could create additional stress. (I have worked in mental health for 14 years) High stress areas like the ED or ICU may also bring you more stress. Consider areas that you are passionate about, do you like pediatrics or geriatrics? Do research on the specialties that you are considering, look for scholarly articles about nurse to patient ratios, burn out patterns, credentialing etc. Some of the specialty nursing organizations have websites that you may be able to access or request a mentor. I have never found that my worst day at work was any worse than going to nursing school at 40, raising 2 kids and going through divorce. lol I always tell myself that I'm here, after surviving what I thought were my worst days! Best of luck to you, you will do great things!
