psych rotation

Hello,

I will be starting my second year in nursing school this Fall. We are starting out with psych. I would like to get a head start on my reading, but our syllabus has not been posted yet. I am just wondering if any of you have been through the psych rotation and have any suggestions as to what to read to get started.

Thanks!

I am also starting my 2nd year in the fall and we have a psych class/clinical too. I am in the same boat - no syllabus or assigned textbook. Last week I went to amazon.com to search around for psych textbooks and found some old ones (around 1999) for, no lie, $.01! After shipping it was $4 and it came in the mail today. Here is the link:

I haven't had the chance to look at it much but it's better than nothing, right?

Fontaine, K (2003) Mental health nursing was pretty good

I don't know about any specific books as I just used my textbook. But as far as concepts, you might want to look into therapeutic communication, mental status exams and psychotropic medications. Of course there are all the different diagnoses...just get a general feel for the types of outcomes you are looking for as well as the diagnostic features.

Buuut, if I were you...take some time and enjoy your summer. Psych was the easiest nursing class I have had so far.
