Psych RN positions

Published

Hello,

I'm a RN and currently live in Raleigh, NC but plan to relocate to Maryland soon to be closer to my fiancé. He lives in New York and we plan to start our life in MD together. He is a high school math teacher and will also need to find a job there. I hold a position that I absolutely LOVE on an acute adult admissions unit at a state hospital, I would like to find a similar position (not necessarily a state hospital). Can anyone suggest a good psychiatric hospital in MD? We don't want to be more than an hour from DC if possible. Thanks!

Hey there, I know that quite a number of hospitals in the area have psych units. But I don't know how the working environments are there.

However, just for some info, Johns Hopkins (downtown campus) was rated #3 on the U.S. News Best Hospitals Rankings for psychiatry, and Sheppard Pratt was rated #6 in the U.S. for psychiatry.

Sheppard Pratt is a psychiatric hospital with locations Towson and Ellicott City.

Spring Grove is the state hospital, and it's located in Catonsville.

If you look at a map of Baltimore, you'll be able to see where Towson, Ellicott City, and Catonsville are located. They're basically suburbs of Baltimore. Towson is north of Baltimore City. Ellicott City and Catonsville are west of Baltimore City.

I wish you the best!

There are a number of hospitals in the DC burbs too that have psych units, unfortunately not a lot of stand alones. In Montgomery County, Montgomery General (MedStar Montgomery), and Suburban have psych units. Adventist has its own psych hospital, Potomac Ridge (Adventist Behavioral Health). In Frederick County, there is also Frederick Memorial that has an inpt hospital. In Hagerstown (that's a little far from DC though) Meritus Medical Center has a psych unit. There is also Brook Lane that is a free standing psych hospital. Also out near Baltimore is Howard County General which has a psych unit. As far as state hospitals, MD actually has quite a few. Springfield Hospital Center is in Sykesville (burbs of Baltimore) and Clifton T Perkins which is next to the state prison in Jessup. That hospital is pretty much all forensic, if you are interested in that population. Finan Center is in Cumberland, but that too is quite far from DC. Can you tell I work in psych? LOL! There are also many community agencies out there, if you are interested in mobile treatment or ACT
