Psych nursing student needs help!

Hi everyone,

I am a nursing student due to graduate in May. I am now in the psych rotation and am having a really hard time, especially with the nursing diagnoses. My real problem is, I have to give a presentation to the patients on setting goals, just goals in general- med compliance, staying healthy, etc. Does anyone have any good Ideas on how I should go about this? I already have some patient goal setting sheets and certificates of participation printed up, but I saw a presentation last week, and the poor student had such a hard time getting the patients to participate. Any Ideas on props,posters...., our professor is known as " Ursula the sea Witch", so you can see why I'm freaking out!

does the unit you are assigned to have a daily goals setting group? If so try watching how the staff enc. participation. You could also try the flip chart or marker board method vs individual paper and pencil. You doing the writing and your pt.s giving the input may get more participation. Can you do it in two parts? get pt. input as to what they want to talk about,vote on top 2-3 ideas one clinical then do the goal setting part the next clinical? That would give you specific ideas for visuals,props etc.... Best of luck. The first time is the hardest,it gets easier each time and your confidence will improve.

Make sure to practice first esp. if you can to peers who can role play your perspective real group.

Maybe ask around if you can and get some advice from the nurses in the facility

Assess your audience. You can find out a lot about what they need by talking to them and finding out their levels of knowledge and knowledge deficits. That way you can tailor your presentation to provide more pertinent information to your audience. A look at their diagnosis, the psychological assessment and the social history may provide some clues as well. Look at recent nurse notes and see what kinds of statements and questions have been noted. Information is all around you. Use it to your benefit.
