Psoriatic nails, maybe fungal infection...will this affect my admission?

Published

I have psoriatic nails. There is some controversy whether or not there is a fungal infection present. Does anyone think this will preclude me from being admitted to a program? Most seem to have a health examination and as this condition is quite visible on my fingernails there is certainly no hiding it (nor would I).

Any thoughts?

More than likely you would have to talk to your Dr. and your school's nursing advisor.

If it is something contageous, then it may hinder your admittance. If it is psoriasis, it is not contagious, and it shouldn't be a problem.

Have you tried Lamasil, or light treatments?

About 4 or 5 years ago i had a test done that came back negative for fungus. Doctors kept insisting it was a fungal infection though.

Finally about a year ago even though I had no insurance I said to hell with it and paid out of pocket for Lamisil. It didn't work. Being out over a $1000 and still having ugly nails made me very upset.

Next thing I know my fingers are starting to hurt. I had been told that I had psoriasis as well as a fungal infection. In my estimation my fingers were hurtng due to psoriatic arthritis. I decided to go see a regular doctor since this seemed to not be a dermatological issue. This doctor said there could be fungus present but was intent on treating the psoriasis first.

So, after doing a lot of homework on the issue I am about 75% or more certain that this is just a psoriatic condition. But hearing over and over again despite tests that prove otherwise and medication that didn't work that it was fungus from doctors has put a certain amount of doubt in my mind.

Ugggh, needless to say I am frustrated indeed. Now, if this stops me from pursuing nursing, I will be REAL mad! Oh well, I will talk to my doctor and my derm to see what they think about me pursuing nursing with this condition.
