Protonix reaction???

Due to the bureaucratic boloney of medical insurances, my new insurance won't pay for Prilosec, but they will foot the bill for Protonix (which is funny because Protonix is butt-expensive)...so I have switched. I just started taking it and I have to tell you...something just doesn't seem right. Hours later, I got really weak, nauseated, light headed, cold and clammy...but I felt really hot. AND, as I was getting report from the day nurse, I hardly understood half of what she said...I was watching her lips moving, but it was all "blah, blah, blah". Needless to say, I was sent home sick.

Can this be a reaction, or just a coincidence? I've given IV Protonix to a number of patients, and no one has ever had a reaction before.

While I've never seen a reaction to protonix; I would be cautious with the next does if there is one. Does your insurance company cover Nexium. If so then give that a try. Same mechanism of action.

okay I just got on the net searching for info on protonix and a possible side effect on hypoglyemia because my Mosby's 2006 drug reference states "if diabetic hypoglycemia may occur" with protonix; I have searched for 20 minutes so far and not found anything more on that; the reason I'm doing this is a patient with hypoglycemia and has a scheduled dose of protonix due, and I read that in the drug book, I"m thinking hold! but that's the only place I see it as a side effect, until I found this here about the reaction of weaknesss, nausea, sweating, ie classic symptoms of hypoglycemia. Huh.
