That is interesting as it seems like the position would be posted as a nurse instead of an aide if they use only nurses. I work for a large pediatric hospital that uses aides for individual schools and has RN's over them for the district. Maybe they are changing their modus operandus (spelling?)

High schools probably have less per capita visits than elementary schools. Pretty subjective, depends on your preference for actually immature, or denying maturity.

I could be all wrong on this, but I work for a major pediatric hospital that contracts with school districts to provide nursing services. My pay is hourly, I am able to get benefits, yada-yada. My base pay is less though than I would be if I was a district employee on the a teacher scale. On the upside of this, there are resources backing you from the hospital. We do also participate in the educational retirement system, not social security. I think there are probably different meanings depending on where you work. I mostly do clinic hands on, but do IHP's and ETR's when necessary.

I also agree with home health or school nursing. Unfortunately, with school nursing - or some positions that offer a more flexible, predicable schedule, the pay is not as high as some other fields of nursing.

Renal access fistulas and grafts are very susceptible to clotting off. The patient is taught to listen for the bruit everyday. A lot of the patient wear a bracelet on their access arm in case they are hospitalized or in a squad so that the arm is not used for an iv or blood draw. If the bruit is not heard by staff or patient, if they can be seen by a special procedures lab at a hospital, they might be able to get it opened up again. Good luck in your first year!

Organizers are a great idea, I have been in clinics without locked doors and the meds have been in a locked desk drawer or filing cabinet after school hours if need be.

I didn't read through all the posts, but my favorite is some of the scenes with a dialysis machine beside the bed with red stuff in the tubing and the blood pump running. Where is the blood coming from? The person in the bed does not have a catheter or an access!!!

Her class should have a checklist, goals, tasks that the professor has established for them, shouldn't it?

I have had the attendance secretary tell me someone left the building, picked up by a parent due to not feeling well. Were they in to see me? NO. I can only do so much...

Ultrasound has a shorter time frame to get to a paying job, doesn't it? With BSN's being required, I might think about ultrasound if I had to do it over again.

I am so sorry for the LD also, so many tough family situations that the grandparents end up having to raise the kids. No excuse - but she probably never signed up for the responsibility of doing this - and is bitter. The kid deserves better.

I will try to accommodate staff, not wanting to make any enemies, if I can. If there is a student in the clinic, I would direct the teacher to supplies and the sink. The students take priority.

Our state has a database of everyone's immunizations put out/kept by the State Health Dept. Maybe your other nurse contacts would know. Most of the times the provider will document the shots given, but sometimes they are not in the database. Send a letter home requesting records, call parents for records.

OldDude, how long did it take for the parents to get used to the change in the policy? Do you see more cases, less or about the same now that your district has changed it? I have irate parents calling me up and accusing other students of having them, etc. (very small town)

I know you probably have seen this, but Natroba supposedly has been cleared to not have nits picked out of the hair. Expensive, but maybe the lice are resistant to the products they have been using. Again, it does not allow for the parents not treating the environment, bedding, etc.

Hang in there, this is a learn as you go vocation. Maybe ask her to chart out the position's responsibilities on a month by month basis on a calendar, or schedule. It does discourage you a lot though when that happens.

There is a 6th grade boy, small for his age, that comes in occasionally to use his rescue inhaler. You can tell kids whose parents stress politeness in upbringing, he actually engages in conversation with you rather than the stilted school nurse conversation. So refreshing!

Is there a department of health contact you could call? Some DOP's have clinics or resources. Also the Lions Club is an advocate for children's sight, try to contact the local chapter?

We have about 8 weeks off and have to be back for some August training and sessions at the hospital. I can choose to not work, but camps are not an option unless it is day camp. I have family to take care of although they are older. Thanks for the input!

Besides the Ear-ease, what DIY ideas for a heat pak? I don't have any funds for fancy stuff. I have a few washcloths that I microwave, put in a baggie and let them use. Any better ideas?
