  1. If the shoe fits

I also changed to running shoes. I like Altras, especially the Torin, for work. I have wide feet so these work well for me. My doc suggested them years ago and I've never owned another brand of running shoe since.
  2. Adventure seeking Nurse Practitioner specialty

Wilderness medicine is an actual discipline and an elective option now in many medical schools. Think...expedition medicine on high altitude or extended backcountry excursions. Wilderness medicine education is available for laypeople all the way thro...
  3. Sorry you had this experience. And, sorry you felt you had to quit. If you find yourself in this situation in your next position, I'd encourage you to talk with you coworkers, managers, and educators. Your experience was normal. I lasted only 16 mont...
  4. TNCC?

Hi all. I'm working on transitioning to the ED after four years of varied RN experience in med-surg, NICU/peds float, and some ambulatory agency work on the side. I have been told differing opinions on whether or not to do my TNCC before applying. So...
  5. The ONE thing that will make your nursing life easier

Altras saved my feet and my back! Never doing nights and a more flexible schedule would be awesome. I'm working on those last two. Second the pause button!!
  6. You'll have an easier time getting into an accelerated program with Bs than you will an ADN program. They'll look at essays and life experience more than other programs. At least that was true for me.
  7. Take the short commute. I had that commute on nights for a bit and almost killed myself a couple times falling asleep on my way home. It isn't worth it for you and your family. It sucks to quit so soon but it is better than six months from now when ...
  8. Stupid things that nurses say

Not what I said, but my patient's family. Mom was pumping breast milk in NICU. Dad reaches out, grabs both breasts, "here, honey, let me help you with that." He starts massaging both breasts and smirking about it. Then he jokes about how long they h...
  9. Anyone switch from L&D to MB?

The MB and LD difference is very similar to the feeling in med surg and ER or ICU. Like those in med surg are less skilled or less valuable. NOT TRUE at all, just different. No shame in wanting to do different.
  10. Oh, you quirky night shifter you!

Love this thread! I'm going back to nights in a new job I start next week. I'm terrified to go back! Good to hear that people do actually love it.
  11. Oh, you quirky night shifter you!

Congrats on your job! I wondered what you decided on. Sorry you got so much crap in one of your recent posts. It's just what happens sometimes I guess.
  12. What do you eat in the morning?

I like to eat a hearty meal too. It's all about making time to cook for me. I sometimes choose the snooze button over morning cooking! When I do that, I try to always have boiled eggs on hand. I also keep a box of breakfast sausages in the freezer at...
  13. Any recommendations for arch pain?

I love altras. They are "foot shaped" and have never hurt my feet. They don't have a lot of support though. It feels like I am wearing really cushy socks all day!
  14. New labor and delivery nurse!! Tips/advice/stories wanted ;)

Congrats! I too am transitioning from maternity, peds, and NICU float to OB. My biggest tip from floating there occasionally to help is to be open to what people have to say. Get to know people, ask questions, and show that you are truly interested i...
  15. Gift basket for new L&D nurse

You sound like a great friend! I liked the book Fast Facts for the L&D Nurse. It is expensive for what it is though! What EFM cheat sheet did you get her? I'm looking for one.
  16. Sharpie on Tegaderm

You can also use small paper tape over the edge of the tegaderm and write on that.
  17. New Nurse With Large Disposable Income

Pass your boards! Good luck, btw! Then, spend part of your first couple checks doing what you haven't been able to while you were a student. Get some nice --fill In the blank. Get it out of your system, then, do what everyone else says. Start an emer...
  18. Not new RN, but orienting and feel DUMB

    So sorry!
  19. Preferred Nurse Specialty vs. Preferred Hospital

Any hospital you work at is likely going to have underserved, uninsured, and/or underinsured patients. I wouldn't necessarily pick based on that. Do they offer good benefits? Are they Magnet or is there a formal system for nurses to be involved in sh...
  20. Online Tutorials: Electronic Fetal Monitoring

Thank you! The QCOM one is great (and free)!
  21. How long is your commute?

I commuted 70 minutes for job 1, 60 for job 2 (until I moved, then 80), then 30! I wouldn't have traded the experience though. I tried to make it work for a long time with the log commute but it was hard for my family. I'd say it is really up to you....
  22. Not new RN, but orienting and feel DUMB

You might consider letting your trainer(s) know how you feel. Knowing how much you are struggling may help them too.
  23. Help Me Get Excited About My Shift to Night Shift!

I found it hard to eat on night shift. It turns out that putting bacon in my salads (and pretty much everything else) made it much easier Also, coffee was my friend. Going back to nights soon after a year on days. Nervous!
  24. Help!! New grad ER or L&D?

I find that in my hospitals it seems to be easier for RNs to go from L&D to ED than from L&D to ED. Also, many places I've looked, it has been said it is harder to get into L&D without that golden year of experience unless you are an inte...

So helpful! Had an interview last week and had all questions listed in these posts! It went REALLY well because of y'all. So, THANK YOU!!!
