Trying to transition from medical to mother/baby, need advice!
I my self made the transition from medical to labour and delivery. I've been a nurse since 2011 and have been struggling to get in to this area for about 2 solid years now. What I did, and this might sound crazy lol, but in my hospital I work at, I found out who the nurse manager was for L&D and emailed her personally. I told her my background and how eager I was to work for the obstetrics unit. Every single time there was a position posted , I would apply and then like a crazy stalker, I would email her. I did this off and on for almost a solid year, year in a half. Finally I got my break and she emailed me back. She eventually got me in for an interview and I will be starting this week to be exact. So I feel your pain bc it can take a while. My advice is don't be afraid to look like a crazy person In the most professional way possible lol 😆. Send a resume. Drop one under her door. Call and talk to her. Keep your expectations low but always sound eager and willing to do whatever it takes. Sell yourself aswell. Although u may not have experience in that particular area, you do have experience. And that is important and valuable. Good luck !! Crossing my fingers for ya

Would you leave your current position over scheduling issues?
Absolutely! !!! I myself just went through something very similar. I work night shift full time and have done that for over a year. The schedule and the shift has definitely weighed on me. I am finally transferring to a day full time hours prn (my husband carries the insurance/medical benefits ). This way I only have to do 1 major holiday a year. 1 weekend a month and my pay is more than my nights. This works for me. I will say this, if you are not enjoying the schedule now, it is only going to get worse. Start inquiring about other positions. It may take you a while to find something so start now. Be picky. Find something you know you will like and where the schedule will fit your life style. You will be much happier! You have worked hard to earn you license and should be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Good luck

New Grad Maternity Residency Question!
Seriously best response ever! !! I posted a similar post recently and have been waiting to get reaponses. I found this thread and read your response and I am seriously taking away lots of valuable info!! Well put and we'll written!!!! I too recently accepted a position as a l and d nurse and I am coming from a neuro tele floor. I can't express how excited I am, but, I am terribly nervous and feel as if I am started allllll over. I am up for the challenge but definitely nervous. ...I have a couple questions that if you would like to answer would be great!!! 1. Cervical dilation- how to check mom's and what it feels like and how do I know if I am correct and do they let us practice? 2. Is there a possibility that I could deliver babies with out a dr? What is that like Thanks !!

Is My Pay Really That Bad???
I have been an RN for 1.5 years. My base pay for full time employee at the hospital I work in with no experience is 22.25 an hour. My base pay is 23.75 given my experience. I work night shift full time and average 27.00 an hour with my differential. I am about to switch over to full time prn day shift and I will be making 32.25. (I won't receive health insurance) . I live in central florida. Idk if this helps but I always find it interesting the pay differences with nurses

New labor and delivery nurse!! Tips/advice/stories wanted ;)
Hello nurses! This is my first post! I have been a nurse since 2011 and have finally snagged my "dream job" as a labor and delivery nurse. The past year in a half I have been working on a neuro telemetry unit. I'm writing this post because I need some advice! Although this last year has been amazing when it comes to learning, I feel being a brand new, no experience labor nurse, I do not know anything about being a labor nurse. Just the verbiage makes me nervous! Since I got the news of the new job I have been trying to do my research. I am asking for some advice, some stories, and what I can expect as I embark on this journey!! Is there anything i should research or focus on to help me understand some of the new obstacles i will face. So excited and looking forward to hearing from everyone! !
