Where are the "normal" births?
It is called the medicalization of pregnant women. Women who are pregnant are treated as if there is a problem, not as healthy women. Pregnancy is thought of now as an abnormal state of being.

Newbie with CNM school questions
I have and am currently attending Frontier. Frontier does not pair you up with a preceptor, you have to find your own. Frontier is a distance learning program. There is a part time track and full time track. If you are married and have kids, i suggest the part time track. I have 2 kids, a disabled husband, and a full time job, and go to school. I have been in school a little over 3 years now. It has been hard, and due to recent events I have taken a leave of absence. I can tell you that the staff there is so supportive and will do anything they can to help you. IF you have more questions feel free to contact me.

Midwifery?
I would so ignore your professer. Sounds like a real winner saying that. I have been in school for CNM for 1.5 years now... and work in L&D. I had a doc to tell me that as a midwife, I would be "of no use to him" Oh well, at least I know where he stands and what he thinks of midwives. Let it roll of your back and go with your plans.

Would I enjoy being a CNM?
The answer lies within your heart. If it eats at you every day until you do something about it, you know you want to be a midwife. I too have had a love of labor and delivery and until I applied and was accepted into the program at Frontier, it was almost a burden for me. I constantly thought about it. So my advice is follow your heart, and it says you gotta do it...then that is your answer. Good luck.

I Got in to Frontier!

Is distance learning as effective?
I can't speak for others, but I have been at Frontier for 1.5 years now, and distance learning is effective. I have learned and growed from the experience. It is tough though, and I think it has to be because it is distance learning.

Finding support during Frontier
I too am a Frontier student and the forums are a big help. You will be assigned within a group at Bound and hopefully your group will click! I know the group I was in clicked and we offer support to each other. Even though you are not physically connected, you are just an e-mail away from support. :typing

Natural Birth Friendly Nursing?
To answer some of your questions: Do you see interventions placed on patients that may not be necessary? The answer is yes all time. If a doctor wants them delivered, they are delivered. Do you see women having sections because they don't need or don't want them? Yes. We live in a time where anything can be on demand, even csections. Sometimes its like going to McDonalds Just drive up and order up a section Does joy overide the bad? Most definately. Can you make a difference? Yes you can make a difference to one woman and one baby at a time...

grad school w/ lil ones
Well, it can be done slowly with kids by not easily. You study when you can, your house is always a wreck, your spouse gets jealous, but it turns out in the long run. I have a 4 and 6 year old. I wish I had started before I had kids!! I would be finished by now. You will have days you want to pull your hair out with kids... Hindsite is 20/20 I am half way through the program now.. but if I had it to do all over again, I would do it before I had kids. I am also working full time too...:typing

Pitocin admin via infusion pump
Pit is always supposed to be on its own pump and piggybacked at the lowest port of a mainline. This sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen with 2 different fluids on the same pump. If it is set a secondary rate what if the primary kicks back in??

Have you taken one of these Stats courses for Frontier entry requirement?
Hi there. I am a Frontier student and did not take either one of the above courses, but I did take a statistics course that Frontier recommended and was transferred for credit and it was through Canyon College. It was very user friendly, totally online. The instructor I had was great and answered all questions. I too hate math and had a really bad fear of taking the course, but I did ok in it. Good luck.
