  1. i'm sure it won't be as bad as you think. i know it will be different, but i have already made it through my first bs degree (in cell biology) and i still was able to maintain my relationships. you will find a balance. you will also have to make sacrifices at times, but you should prepare yourself for them and make room for them. don't be nervous. everything will unravel in time. :)
  2. i will be entering into nursing school this fall and i will have 2 and a half years until i finish the program. i have been married for 4 years and me and my husband have been talking about having a child. i was wondering if anyone had any information/advice/experience they would share with me, please? i realize i should wait till after i finish school, but how long should i work before we decide to have a child? how do employers react to a pregnant employee? how hard would it be to be pregnant and work? what else should i consider? i don't want my job to suffer, but i don't want my family life to suffer either.

i am going to be entering into nursing school this fall and i have been thinking about a speciality. i would really like to work as a delivery/newborn nurse. we were discussing careers in class, not a nursing class, and i said i would like to go on to get my masters, after achieveing the bsn. i told my professor that i would like to eventually be a nurse practitioner or midwife and that i was leaning more towards midwife. he was like "midwife, don't you think that's a little old-fashioned. people don't really go to midwives anymore. i know i would take my wife to a doctor over a midwife...blah, blah, blah." i was shocked that he was so bluntly against my decision. i mean, it was rude. he asked, i shared, and he showed total disrespect (in front of the whole class). what do you all think about being a midwife? any opinions/advice/information? please?
  4. hello. i start nursing school this fall '08, entering into a bsn program. unlike most (or at least some of you), i didn't do pre-nursing at all. my background is in biology. i guess i got lucky with the school i chose, i got in my first try. we will have to do a semester of lab and coursework before we can start rotations (which i am thankful for since i don't have a background in nursing). anyway, i'm excited and ready to go! has anyone considered a speciality area?
  5. i took general chemistry i and ii, organic chemistry i and ii, and biochemistry. the main differences are location and application (and biochem usually does not have an associated lab). gchem and ochem both involve a little algebra, lots of "laboratory" use information, and chemical interactions and structures. biochem usually steers toward proteins, bodily chemical reactions and mechanisms, etc (hence "bio," biological chemistry). i thought biochem was significantly more interesting, but there was a lot of information involved. i thought ochem was far the worst, boring!!! so many structures, such small attention span (when it comes to ochem). the key is to stay plugged in! don't let yourself stray when your in class and try to put two and two together. my professor for biochem asked a lot of applied or thinking questions on the tests, so learn how to associate the material. good luck with both!
