Thanks for the feedback, and heaven forgive me for a TYPO....

Lawsuit Claims Nurse Was 'Worked to Death'
YES!!! JC definetly needs to look at staffing ratios! There is enough evidence to support the fact that there is a significant safety issue here...

do you follow up with your patients?
I've seen this mostly on ER shows like NY ER or Trauma : (but this question could apply to anyone in any dept) where doctors and nurses go check on a particular patient to see how they're doing. After a patient is no longer in your care (IE been transferred to ICU, Stepdown etc) Have you ever gone and visited? Have you ever had a patient that for some reason you just really cared to know the outcome? And if you did.. wouldn't that be a HIPPA Issue? (looking up stuff without 'need to know') Just curious as usual....

Telemetry Tech Training
Our tele techs take a course on EKG interpretation, about 32 hours of class time and some study at home. Some were CNA/PCT, patient transport etc. At my hospital they pay $3-4 more an hour for a much easier job, I'd go for it if I wasn't already looking for an RN spot.

Unique jobs?
Im curious what are some nursing jobs that aren't your typical hospital or clinic setting. I've considered going over seas for a while, or trying to get on a cruise ship, I'm also interested in travel nursing. I'm also planning on doing short missionary trips to volunteer in clinics. I'd like to know what other places an RN can find employment outside of the traditional settings. How do you find these positions? Have you ever had a really interesting nursing job outside of the traditional setting?

ED Cheat sheet?
On occasion I can write a quick note on my gloved hand if I don't have anything else handy. Of course I usually toss the gloves and forget what I wrote....

Charting Bloopers
I wonder how many of these errors are due to transcription or scribe mis-interpretation. Still hilarious, so keep em coming!

School Interview: Relax. Your Past Won't Haunt You.
Years ago my sister made some false accusations and tried to have me arrested. (really, I guess she could have been charged with 911 abuse or something, this was not the only time she did something like this... anyhow....) However I got extremely lucky, it was a very small town and the officer that came to the house knew her from other run ins and gave her a stern talking to. I thank my lucky stars that it wasn't another officer that would have arrested me, I was 18 or 19 at the time and knew that I would never be a nurse with a record. Now my credit history does really concern me. I lost my job almost 2 years ago, which allowed me to finally go back to school. So of course I had a hard time keeping up with bills so my score is in the toilet. I'm worried that it will affect getting a job, I have heard that it has prevented some. But I just started a job as a hospital transporter, and I'll be licensed in about a month so hopefully it will be easier for me to get an RN spot.

What do you like least/most about private duty?
I'm thinking about doing a some private duty or home health, just as a side job and hope to work in a hospital full time. Gotta take a second job at least for a while to pay down student debt....Anyhow.... What do you like about private duty the most? What made you choose it? Why do you stay? Whats the best part or perk? and on the flipside... What's the worst part? The biggest drawback?

"Fake" or Nonprescriptive Eyeglasses
Hipsters.... I do wear needed glasses, but not as often as I should. They are a pain, and I can see ok enough most of the time. I find I am needing them more and more for computer work, homework etc. I have an astigmatism, driving at night is super hard becuase of the glares I constantly see. I'm considering contacts because glasses are such a pain, but I really have an aversion to shoving foreign objects in my eyeballs. I think eventually I will get contacts (when I am working and have insurance again) glasses are so annoying.

What study habits work and don't work for nursing school?
do some review each day. Don't try to cram it all in the day before the test because you will never make thru all the material in one night. Practice questions!!! Get the workbooks that go with your texts, there's lots of great questions in there, and you can test yourself to see how well you know the material. Sometimes teachers even take test questions from there. If you have ATI use it, and learn to love it. Search youtube, there's lots of helpful videos. I think the biggest thing is to do a little bit each day, rather than all the day before exam.

How much of your cohort did you "lose"?
You hit the nail on the head here.. all the people that have been having problems are the ones that party, are lazy, show up late, dont follow instruction, don't pay attention in lecture, complain, and expect everything to be handed to them. After failing an ATI test, one said... hahahah pfft... who has time to study for that crap??? Literally.... this was said.

How much of your cohort did you "lose"?
My cohort is 22, we graduate in September (woohoooo!!!!!). One failed a course, and repeated, and is now a term behind us, another delivered her baby very early (was due during break) and had to miss most of the same term, and so now she is a term behind. One left to transfer to another program. So now we have 22. We recently took the ATI Predictor, 9/22 passed. The lowest score was a 27%. More than half of the class failed. There has been ABSURD amounts of cheating, and dishonesty among several classmates. I'd say about half of my class should have been kicked out of the program LONG ago, they've only been passing due to all the cheating they've been doing. But Administration says they don't have enough solid evidence to support kicking them out. So all of the people that should have failed out over the last 2 years are going to get stuck in limbo right at the very end. And they deserve every bit of it.

The end is near... Yay!!!
I passed my ATI comprehensive predictor this week, (required before our name will be submitted to get our sit pass) Another step closer! Good luck everyone, we CAN do it!!!

For-profit nursing school/hands-on training practice at home/
I graduate a for profit school in Sept. with an ADN. Definetly check into accreditation. If the school does not have NLN, its not the end of the world, you will still be able to find a job and you will still be able to continue your education. Regional accreditation is generally better than National, once you graduate with your ADN it will be much easier to get into a state school (I am looking at USF since I live in Tampa) which will be much more cost effective as well. For the most part, I really like my program. We haven't had the best clinical sites, but we are still very new campus. Most of the teachers are fantastic, and I like the smaller classes, I was able to start right away, and most of my previous college credits transferred in. You just have to figure out what's best for you in your situation. Then you need to find programs in your area that interest you and do plenty of research on the specific school before enrolling.

Question about what stethoscope to buy for nursing program?
Had a prestige and it was awful, couldn't hear anything with it. I now have a Littmann master classic 2 and absolutely love it. The MDF MD1 is just as good as a littmann, but a little cheaper. Even as a student I am really glad I had a Littmann, it was much easier to pick up subtle sounds.

Wondering about this class
I'm taking Intro to Critical Thinking now, my last semester. It's really not difficult, but there's a lot of essays, online discussion posts (online class) and it can get to be time consuming. I'd rather spend this time on preparing for NCLEX, and this class is kinda boring, but it's not terribly difficult. But it all depends on the instructor

Advice for Peds/OB
I'd never spent much time around kids, so it was very awkward getting used to being on a ped's floor. They were great tho, and I had a blast. I only had 2 days of OB, saw 2 c sections the first, and then did some assesements on mom's about 12-24 hours post delivery, which was interesting. Those patients were wonderful too. Really enjoyed getting to spend some time with the newborns! I got the memory notebook of OB nursing by Mosby, has those silly cartoons to help you remember stuff, and it helped some. Otherwise I did what I'd been doing all along, just doing lots of reading and practice questions.

Any tips on how to succeed in nursing school?
This, and managing your time wisely. Do some review everyday.

If you could "do over" one thing about nursing school, what would it be?
I did pretty well, and am SO ready to graduate in September. Tho I would go back and be more organized, study more and procrastinate less. But then again I can't complain about a 3.8. I got on the bad side of one of my clinical instructors, and then got assigned to her group again in another semester which was hard cos she already had a very negative attitude towards me. I wish I could go back and kiss butt and not panic about how awful she was to me.

That awkward moment when....
Had a patient that would always be wheeling herself around the halls of the nursing home and carrying on a conversation, i thought she had a bluetooth (she was probably 45). Full conversations, talking clear as day, and continuing talking as someones replied to her. Nope, no cell phone/blue tooth.

NCLEX Rules - Please Follow Them!
If the testing center staff go to give you your phone, but the seal is broken on the envelope or bag, you may automatically FAIL. In some cases, you may even be barred from every taking NCLEX again. Heard about this at NSNA national conference this spring... but then again, I'm sure it's becuase there has been cheating in the past.

CNA while in school
Also look at administrative or secretary, unit clerk type positions. Having some exposure to med. terminology can help you there. Keep applying to CNA or tech jobs as well. Once you've taken your fundamentals course, some states will let you challange the CNA exam, so you would take the test and get the cert without having to pay to re take the class. Any job in a hospital will give you a leg up.
