You know, I thought nursing was a professional occupation.....You are not going out to a pub/club, hair should be up if directly involved with patient care and make-up should be at a minimum!! It's no wonder that people think that nurses are just there to "marry a doctor"

Water for pain relief works the same during contractions as you would find it useful during menstrual cramps....some women like it, some don't...the buoyancy of the water is also a factor, if the woman is in a proper birthing pool the 'weight' of her pregnancy is lifted and this often feels beneficial.

This thread is proving invaluable...I'm soon off to AZ from UK where I've been a midwife for 13yrs. We use fully=fully dilated not effaced/partially effaced/ fully effaced FLK is popular here too SCBU (skabu)=special care baby unit...still used though most are signed as NICU the cervix might be up with the gods or in the heavens always ultrasound not sonogram I'm sure I'll think of a bunch more as I click post but that's the norm.

I kind of stumbled across it....I was waiting for security clearance from the Army....that took so long...I was bored and in a dead end job...they were advertising training so I applied...I finally got Army clearance the day before my nurse training was confirmed...Anyway, long story short, I took the nursing as the Army wasn't definite...did RN, worked CCU for 2 yrs, did midwifery and then joined the Army with 3+ years exp as a midwife...so I got to do both...Lucky :):)

I was 34 but that was down to not being in a suitable relationship...in all honesty I think I have more patience now but I get more tired

OK here goes.... I'm in UK, north, near Bolton right now... have lived in Germany, Cyprus and Canada...have an indian father-in-law.. now waiting for our interview for green cards to move to AZ

I hope you have a fantastic visit to AZ in August. We've thought about a USA visit so many times but we were advised that as we are waiting on Green cards we would probably have trouble getting in for fear that we wouldn't leave. I must admit, we probably wouldn't if we got there

Well, I heard from the lawyers yesterday...the London consulate has been sent our file..now we have to wait for an interview date!!! At least it's another step closer

GRRRRRRRRR. Thank goodness patience is a virtue. It took so long to get all our police clearances because between hubbie and I we've lived in England, Canada, Germany and Cyprus. Our paperwork is now winging it's way to NVC so who knows how long it will take now!! I'm currently in Horwich, kind of between Bolton and Preston. I work per diem at Chorley and have a Clinical Support Specialist job 20 hours a week.

As I understand she has been being treated for such things as chest infections with antibiotics as they've occurred and from what I can gather that was a fairly regular thing.

Well, here goes....I understand the differences between her parents and her husband.....I also understand that her parents did once try to care for Terri. My problem is this.....surely starving someone to death is euthanasia/murder. Why has no-one suggested that Terri not receive further active treatment (maybe they have, feel free to correct me on this one). No more antibiotics for infections etc. Could this not have been a compromise between the two sides?

Can't be so bad if you've been there that long. I'm taking an RN position at Western AZ.

I wrote a paper about midwifery around the world when I was training...not sure what time span you have though...you need time to get snail mail replies from far flung places

Well here goes... As a UK trained and registered midwife since 1992 here's my opinion... Yes childbirth is natural, it's been going on since Adam and Eve...what has changed is the morbidity and mortality rates for mothers and babies. I've never delivered a baby at home...I have however labored many women at home and then taken them into the hospital in time for delivery...my intervention was no different at home or in the hospital. I have also been unfortunate enough to deliver a stillborn and to be on shift when there was a maternal death (yes they do still happen). There are three things at play here... 1. Doctors decided that this was their field....I don't feel that it is particularly...they are hopefully trained to prevent and cure disease..this is not a disease. 2. What women expect...in western society women don't expect pain or worse still illness or death from "just having a baby" 3. The staff midwives, doctors and RNs....just because a piece of equipment is available does not mean it has to be used...I have worked alongside people that appear to have this attitude. If we look after a woman in labor it is our task to look ahead, to try to predict abnormalities and to take appropriate action. Bev

Hey Congats!!! I'm just about to move back to UK temporarily until my immigration to AZ is sorted. I was going to Tucson but now I'm going to Bullhead City...right up by Nevada/California/Arizona border. A word of advice...if you wish to take it...keep on top of the hospital and especially the lawyers. This is your number one priority but it isn't theirs (they have other clients).
