    Texting in nursing

There seems to be a preference for texting over calling. With the doctors we have a web portal that sends the information in the form of a text to their phones. Honestly, it makes it harder to make a mistake writing a TO/VO when it is actually writte...

Dropped Pill - Do you give it?

I guess LTC is different as the pills would never fall on the computer and we use med carts. Generally, I will clean my cart at the being of the shift, so I don't think dropping a pill on the cart is that big of a deal. Dropping it on the floor, I wo...

    Wasting controlled substances

I have seen this done, but state wound not approve of this practice or at least that is the case here in Indiana. The pharmacy should have sent half tabs, this is a med error waiting to happen. As for switching out percocet with some other med this i...

    LPN is it worth it?

Most LPNs tend to work in long term care and rehabilitation with home health and correction also having a high demand. Getting a job in a hospital setting or clinic is less common. Now don't get me wrong, clinics and hospitals both still bring in LPN...

5 twelve hour shifts in a row?? Is it safe??

I have done 6 twelves in a row. Is it safe? Perhaps, but what I found is by the end of the week I was getting very irritable. It's not something I wouldn't recommend unless you really need the extra money.

LTC has changed-How do you give out 5pm meds now?

My understanding is that it is a state rule and by association a company policy not to give meds in the dinning room. But it is also the one time all the residents that haven't got their meds are all in one place and I have to be in the dinning room...
  7. Just ignore it and they will forget about it. Besides even if they did know, it wouldn't matter, your employer is not going to fire you over this or at lest legally they can't. Just don't add fuel to the fire by confirming the amount.

Being a male increase your chances

Our school has a strict point system based on academics, sex did not play a role in the selection process. As for the supposed 57%, during all my clinical rotations I met two male nurses and only one was a head nurse every other one was a female.

how do you apply for prerequisites?

I think we had 3 in the LPN and RN program together at the Lawrence campus. I don't know about TEOFL(you need to talk to an advisory), but since I have gone through the nursing program at Ivy Tech Lawrence, I can tell you this. First, you have to ha...

    failed med surg

It maybe embarrassing to fail a class, but it maybe best just to try it again. Besides, many teachers reuse questions year to year and that may give you a leg up next time. Not to mention you have already reviewed this material.

    CPR help

That would make sense. The 4th edition came out in 2009 and the AHA made the change from ABC to CAB in 2010.

    Embarrassed to even post this.

To be honest, the math we do in nursing school is basic algebra, but the pre-req math wasn't. You need a grasp of the basics before you can do college level algebra. However, most schools have placement tests and they will place you in right level ma...

    Insulin Dosages

I have seen carb counting a few times, but mostly it is sliding scale and never by weight. The goal with diabetics is to keep glucose levels in the body within a certain range (not to high and not to low). This is done with insulin products, since...

    CPR help

LandD_RN_chica is correct. A few years ago AHA change the order from ABC to CAB. You must have an older version of saunders, because my version uses CAB.

    Iron with food or without???

I checked three sources: PO: iron is most effectivlly absorbed 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals. If gastric irritation occurs, take with meals. Vitamin C increase abortion, foods high in phytates (grains) decrease absorption. Milk, antacid, eggs, tea,...

    Clinical uniforms?

White top, green bottoms and white shoes. Both the tops and bottoms had to bought at the school and they were a little over $40 each, so one set was $80. The typical "professional rules applied. No visible tattoos, one pair of earnings and they had t...
  17. I would say our text book did a poor job of explaining cultures in general, but Saunders does a pretty good job of over viewing cultures. One thing I noticed with ATI tests, at least, is that culture questions tend to be religion specific or pertain ...

I screwed up - Missing Nclex appointment

I am going to agree with the other posters. Call off sick and take the test. You probably remember more then you think. The worst that can happen is you fail the test and get another 45 days to study anyways.
  19. A&P, microbiology, and chemistry I are usually pre-req or co-req that are usually done before you apply for a nursing program. However, some programs will let you take them at the same time. Every school is different in how they set up their prog...

    e-textbooks

You can highlight and add notes to e-books. We had to buy our books in a bundle anyways. It would have cost a lot of money to but them all again as e-books. But sure would have saved me a lot of trouble if I had the digital versions.

    ATI

It is http://www.ATItesting.com and Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC - Virtual Education. They have a number of diffrent products but it was actually included as part of our program.

    Arbitration?

It is legalese that basically means you waive the right have a claim heard in court by a judge or jury. Any claim you have is heard by third party called an arbitrator, which can award damages or perform other juridical type decision within reason. I...
  23. You need to contact a lawyer and have him look at the contract. $15,000 sounds excessive, but you would be surprised what rights you can sign away. Verbal contracts are binding in some states, but they are harder to prove.

    Dosage question

Answer to number 1 is 31 gtt/min and number 2 is 42 gtt/min. Both are rounded to the whole drop since you can't have a partial drop. Quantity X gtt ------------------- = gtt/min Time(in minutes)
