in order to get my BScN i need to take a "humanities context credit" along with regular nursing classes. I ended up taking medieval and renaissance civilizations. other choices included spanish, greek mythology, and other world history classes. Useless for nursing students but we have no choice.

love it! we need more of this!

-kitchen staff (hate it, so hot in the summer) -receptionist for a realty company (hated it, some realtors can be mean to the support staff) -temp job as H1N1 screener (loved it, basically got paid to study and just told people who entered the hospital to wash their hands or wear a mask) can't wait until i'm done school!

Community colleges offer lots of workshops/seminars in their continuing education department. You get a little certificate to add to your portfolio, learn something new or refresh your memory on a skill you haven't done in awhile. some I've seen include -basic lab interpretation -sterile techniques review -basic massage techniques -glucometers -ostomy care -physical assessment review -infection control

-take study breaks -study the material little by little over a few days rather than all at once in one day -get your stuff packed for the next day the night before -have a good breakfast -study the material in different ways; read it, write it out, quiz your friends, watch youtube videos etc -don't be afraid to ask questions during the test -after the test, our class can normally find at least 1 question that was wrong when taking it up which the teacher will reward a mark for -close your eyes, try to relax, and take a deep breath

i'm going into my 3rd year. so far i've been working on call at my highschool job in a kitchen throughout school. i worked once/twice a month on call during school, then most of reading week and all of summer. i've been trying to get a job relative to nursing with no luck.

Just do it! Be sure to relook at old quizzes since some teachers recycle questions. Reading over and writing out the important stuff a bunch of times helps me to learn.

i leave stuff open. (only at home though) cupboards, dresser drawers. drives my boyfriend nuts.

i see myself as a more logical, orderly person, and i feel like all i do is work! i really wish i could paint or play an instrument or something as an outlet.

i accidently brought the MAR in the room with me and a nurse corrected me that when the pt is on precautious you don't bring the MAR in.

i tried to switch schools this year but i gave up on it because its such a pain in the ***. you have to pay OCAS to apply again, send all of your course outlines, and then they tell you most of your credits aren't transferrable and that there are no seats available.

this is a message my friend wrote to me who is currently in ROTP for nursing. she will be leaving next week for basic. hope this clears up some things "Awh, that stinks! Yeah, the aptitude test is pretty hard-- and really odd in the sense that it's hard to study for... I hope you do better next time, though! No, I haven't done basic yet, that'll be this summer for me! 15 weeks, but I don't know my course dates yet. But that's just because my ULO (University Liason Officer) is slow with paperwork... The people out east already have their course dates.. Yeah, so it's BMOQ this summer, and then next summer I'll have 7 or 8 weeks at BNOC -- a more specialized training for nurses in Gagetown. After that, it's all on-the-job training (OJT). Nursing is probably the best OJT because it's one of the only ones that actually involves practice for your job - most other trades are just pushing pencils/photocopy person... Actually, nursing is really cool in the sense that it's a "Purple Trade", meaning that you're not specific to Land, Air, or Water. You get an opportunity to be in all of them! So basically when you choose your element, you're just choosing what uniform you want to wear. Hint- Navy Nurses have the cutest outfits, haha. It sounds shallow, but the joke is that in nursing it comes down to whether you look better in black, blue, or green, haha. So after schooling and training, you will be working sometimes in base hospitals, but there's a wide range of other things that you can get into! Those include going overseas to base hospitals; being part of Air Vac medical teams, where your job is basically just to pick up injured soldiers by plane and keep them in a stable condition identical to when you picked them up, and transport them to the hospital in Germany or back to Canada; another job could be on the big U.S.S. Comfort ship, where you dock on other overseas countries that need medical assistance! You can also sign up to be a part of the Disaster Area Relief Team (DART), where you cycle through being on a week's notice, 24 hours notice, 12 hours notice, or 6 hours notice to fly out and assist countries under immediate distress (such as Haiti). With DART, as I hear it, you could be a part of for 6 years and not be flown out (because it has to fall under very specific conditions), or you could be deployed just a few weeks into signing up for it! A lot of what you do will be voluntary, but there is also times when you'll get delegated to go overseas or to other stations, and I believe there is a certain amount of overseas duties that you have to do, depending on your contract length. "

you should play some parts from the documentary "the business of being born". it basically goes into detail about how the united states has one of the worst infant mortality rates out of developed countries and how some countries in europe have the best outcomes even though the majority birth at home. really makes you think!
