New Grad - Pregnant New Job
Labor and delivery is a very physical and stressful job. It may be a bit hard to learn the role and care for patients while entering your third trimester. Is there a postpartum unit you could work on first, then transfer to labor after your baby is born? Learning PP first can help with the role of an labor nurse. I think you really need to tell your manager now though so she does not feel surprised when orientation starts in January and sees that you are 6 months pregnant. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

Advice for a new grad working in med-surg?
To start off the shift, review labs on your patients, look at the MAR, look at last MD note. Get your brain sheet organized, know who your PCT will be for the day. Make a game plan with them. Try and stay on top of things from the beginning of your shift, if you need help always reach out to the charge or other coworkers. Stay hydrated if you can, do your best to get through the day. You can do this! Congrats and good luck.. Also, your med surg educator is always someone to reach out to for extra help with skills/procedures. Be aware of your hospitals policies.

I Feel Stuck - Like My Options Are Limited
Since you have psych experience, I would continue with the PMHNP option. After graduating, you could possibly find a remote psych NP job and try and work from home while you care for your new baby. It may not be exactly what you want, but its a start, and its in a field you are familiar with. Being a psych NP will be a different role and feel from working as a psych RN on a unit. Good luck to you!

Advice for a New grad ICU vs Oncology
I would take the ICU job as a new grad. you will learn so much and that experience can take you anywhere. It will be easier in the future to move from an inpatient position to an outpatient onc clinic rather than vice versa. Onc is good experience too, but if your goal is to get any type of inpatient experience first, I would take the ICU job. Good luck!

Moving to Boston, advice needed!
You are welcome. I don't think you will have to pay the fee twice, but I would maybe email them and ask them. My birthday is in October as well and if I remember correctly I think I only paid the fee once when I got my nursing license in July 2014. Not sure if the rules have changed but yes they do make u pay every two years on the even years on your birthday. Good luck!

Moving to Boston, advice needed!
hello, I think with your years experience as an ICU nurse, and if you have your BSN, then you should have no problem finding a job in Boston or the surrounding towns. The pay in Boston hospitals is good, whether you choose a union facility or not. MGH pays well, BMC, CHA, The Brigham. I would go on their websites and browse jobs, maybe contact a nurse recruiter in HR in the coming months to show interest and let them know what qualifications and experience you have. Good luck!

Switching from Acute Care to Ambulatory
I actually left the office position because it was very boring. It was different than working in a clinic it was more sitting in front of a computer and taking messages off of Epic and responding back to them which was not what I thought I would be doing. I wanted to do more nursing type skills and Hands-On work and that was not what this role ended up being. So I went back to my inpatient psych job at the hospital. Of course I do not want to stay in Psych either because I am totally burnt out but it is what I am doing for now.. The Specialty Clinic sounds like a good role hopefully you will learn a lot and enjoy it!

Please help! Which job offer should I take???
Think about driving in bad weather for more than 2 hours when you have to work.. you may need to stay over at work and how would that pan out around your family life with your children? I would take the med surg job closer to home, then after 1 year I would apply or try to shadow in the ICU at your local hospital. You can always move to the bigger hospital when your kids get older and you have more experience under your belt. Good luck!

when do you think hospitals will go back to not requiring masks?

Primary Care vs Urgent Care Job as an RN
I just left a job working three 12-hour shifts and I now work 40 hours a week Monday through Friday in a primary care clinic. I'm struggling with the hours... If you already know you like to travel with your husband then I would take the Urgent Care job so you can work just those two or three days per week and then maybe ask for more hours as time goes on.. you can always switch to primary care if you want to in the future.

Switching from Acute Care to Ambulatory
I just left my ED psych position, 3 12s, for a Family clinic position M-F. I am looking forward to the change, but a bit leary about working 5 days per week. I hope I can manage it. The positive thing is I am leaving the crazy world of psych in the ED setting which has been a nightmare for the past year. I am definitely looking forward to a new area of nursing. Good luck in your new job!

How many jobs have you had in your career?
I've been a nurse for 7 years and I change jobs about every 2 years.. this is due to not being happy with what I do and feeling bored. Along with also having *** management and unsafe work areas. I just want to work with women and children, PP nursing. It is so hard to get into in my state. Majority of my jobs have been psych, (which im sick of) and case management (boring) and hospice, which I did like but the company was not doing good at all. I know it sounds awful.. I hate not being satisfied in my job, its my own fault. I wish I could be someone who just finds that one job and sticks with it for the next 20 to 30 years.

New job offer, should I accept?
I am in the same situation as you. I am wanting to leave the hospital, 3 12s a week for a mon to fri 8 to 5 family practice position. I am leaning towards taking it..but I am nervous. The drive is longer than my job now, but it'll be more money. I am trying to get used to having only 2 days off a week instead of my wonderful 4 days off per week that I have now. I wish you good luck in your decision!

Switching to children’s psych from adult psych?
I work with both adults and children in the ED as a psych nurse. I prefer working with kids more, I guess I have more compassion for them. It is tough hearing their stories sometimes, but I do not take it home with me. I can somehow shut off my work brain and leave everything behind once I leave the hospital. Most of the stuff I am seeing now with kids coming in are increased depression, anxiety, and boredom due to the pandemic. they fight with their parents, the parents usually call the cops to straighten out their kid, the kid gets upset, says they want to kill themselves then they just earned themselves a section 12 for saying that. It's the same story over and over. I see alot of kids from group homes too, who are unruly and run away and are very behavioral. A lot of kids are cutting more now, due to being stuck at home and not being in school or with their friends. A lot of kids are using drugs more and more to try and take their anxiety and depression away. Some kids just hate their life and their families and they do not know why. It's really sad.. Sometimes you can help be a lending ear to them and they will open up and listen to you. others may remain guarded with an attitude, it all depends. I have an older kid so these stories do not affect me much, I can separate them from my feelings somehow. I think you will be okay.. just give it a try. Good luck!

Cambridge Health Alliance Psych
Hi I have heard of CHA, I was looking at their job openings yhe other day. They have an adult unit an Adolescent unit and a child unit. They also have units at their Cambridge hospital site and also at their Somerville Center which I heard is opening up more beds and they will need more staff there. I have been a nurse for 7 years and 4 of those years I have been working in Psych. Just make sure that psych is really what you want because sometimes it is hard once you start in Psych it is hard to venture out into other areas I am now finding out. I do not know anything personal about that hospital and I do not know anything about their pay but since it is close to Boston I am going to guess that it is a decent hourly wage. Good luck with your job search as a new grad!
