  1. How is it working at an assisted living facility? I heard it's diff from LTC and NH. Residents are independent and I'll be handing out meds at their rooms. Is the job fairly easy?
  2. I work full time at a dialysis center but need extra income. Currently my facility doesn't have overtime hours. I looked at the apps and they're mostly nursing home positions. I have 6 months med surg experience and 5 Months dialysis. Do you think I'll be able to handle NH agency shifts?

  4. I worked 5 months on a med surg unit and quit because I had severe anxiety about not knowing what type of patients I would get. I transitioned to dialysis and I'm liking the routine. But it doesn't pay well. I want to pick up extra shifts some place else. How are nursing homes? With 5 months on a med surg unit I learned a lot but didn't learn how to give blood or peg tubes. Can I still work at nursing homes? What other pm positions will be a good fit for those who like routine?
  5. hey..I am feeling the same.. how are you holding up??
  6. I'm a brand new nurse. I'm on week 6 of my 8 week orientation on a cardiac tele floor. I admit, I am a slow and visual learner. It might take more than 5 times for me to understand it about the same things. My preceptor gives me 4-5 patients to take care of on my own. Of course, she's there when I have questions. But otherwise, she lets me do most things like giving meds and calling doctors. I have high anxiety, am shy, and get nervous. Morning rounds stress me out because I hate public speaking. These rounds are so formal because we go into an empty room. I've seen rounds during clinicals where nurses just stand and round, quick 1 minute. My preceptor is with me and she chimes in when I'm missing something but to do it every single time stresses me out. I feel like I am too slow at learning, some days I get it and some days I don't. I'm not even using critical thinking skills. At this point, I'm only task- oriented, trying to complete giving meds and orders or finishing assessments. I can tell my preceptor is annoyed with me. She says I'm doing great. But she also asks me if this is my last week with her and if I am going to nights to orient on nights. Like she's trying to get rid of me. I will have a different preceptor because my preceptor is going away on vacation and learning with a new preceptor stresses me out too. Any words of advice.
  7. I'm a new nurse, going to start my residency in 2 weeks. My unit will be med-surg surgical but mostly ortho. Can you tell me how your day will be like night and days? I'll be orientating during the day but working nights after. You get report and then what? Is it true ortho is mostly paid meds and getting them up?
  8. Hi nurses! I am a new grad who got a job on a med-surg surgical unit. I was told the orientation was going to be 6-8 weeks because it's a non-specialty floor. I'll be training on the day shift but my offer is for nights. I worked 6 years as a PCT in the float pool-almost a year in the ER. I am so nervous. I have no problem talking to patients, or at least I think so. But it's a different hospital so it's all new computer system, new blood sugar machines, new everything for me. I am so nervous and ridden with anxiety. I don't think I learned much in clinicals, but everyone says not to worry because I will learn the basics at work. I am very task oriented and get frazzled easily. Med-surg surgical floor- what can I expect? what's the order of things? how do I start my day? do I look at orders first on my computer and just complete all orders?
  9. Are there any new grads here who have started work already? I have an interview on a surgical-ortho unit and I am soooo nervous. I have been a PCT for 6 years. Do you think being a PCT for a long time will help me as a nurse even if it's a different hospital? I heard school and real world nursing are different. I don't think I did a lot of hands on during clinical, but the preceptor will teach me everything from the basics right? from the IV to using needles etc? and what are the chances they will not take me after the interview with the manager??
  10. I got my nursing license in 2016 but never worked as a nurse. My license is still active. However, I work as a nursing assistant. I suffer from major anxiety and got too comfortable working as an assistant. I saw the nurses working sooo hard and what they go through. But now, I want to overcome my fears and actually work as a RN. I feel like if I tell my hospital, I'd get fired because I was working as a NA with a RN license. I was thinking I should apply as a new graduate nurse in other places. Any suggestions?
  11. I'm a nursing assistant in a hospital. I picked up extra hours after my shift to break sitters for their breaks. I went to break a sitter. The patient (74 yo male) was sitting on the side of the bed eating. He got up suddenly and his butt was facing away from the bed. He was not wearing pampers nor any underwear. Just a gown. I grabbed him hard so he didn't fall. I told him to sit down on the bed while grabbing him and he was yelling at me to let go. His sister was in the room and she was yelling at me to stop grabbing him. He laid down on the bed and took off the pads underneath him. He and his sister told yelled at me not to grab him ever. I told them I didn't want him to fall. But they said still don't grab him. Had I not grabbed him he would've fallen and there was a pole and drawer behind him. The sister went out and told the clerk that I shouldn't grab him. The clerk came in and said she was just making sure you didn't fall. They didn't want me in the room so I stood outside until the sitter came back from break. I can hear them talking about me. I told the nurse what happened. He said it's fine, don't take it personally because that's why he needed a sitter. For agitation, pulling on things etc. But I'm just shaken up because they were staring at me and saying is she going to stay with me all night. Geez. You're too aggressive. I just felt like they didn't understand why I grabbed him. Do I not and let him fall??? I just feel a little upset about it...
