  1. This is a tragedy! Every nurse I know is exhausted! No matter 8,10,12's. I am much better at the end of my 3rd consecutive, night shift than 1st. Nurses have to stop being everything to all people, that first means not getting abused at work, sufficient staffing, getting a real break each shift like any other worker does.
  2. Gtubes get dislodged often enough. You fixed it, that is what separates you as a good nurse. LIPs make mistakes all the time. B/c I value the working relationship and the patient, I notify them and ask for a change in order. They need to treat you like a team member, which they are not doing. Next steps are to reduce the likelihood of this happening. Did you have enough trained staff? How large was patient? The solutions will likely be things mgt will not act upon, because it will cost them pennies. Suggest them anyway, you are a partner here, use your voice.
  3. Nurse Beth, Big MISS! We all know what it is like to schedule medical appointments these days, rescheduling means waiting months. That compromises the nurse's health. NO job is worth it, that place would replace you in a day without a thought.
  4. What kind of disgusting facility/agency exists where the nurse has 47 patients ??

Sounds like you are doing great ! In my school system, anyone who vomits twice, at least one witnessed, goes home. Look at the history of the student. We use SNAP charting and can see every previous visit, this can be very helpful. I also ask what class they came from,.. does math class always make you vomit? Also nobody (almost) goes home during the first or last hour of the day .
  6. Run away as fast as you can !! If they ask for explanation provide a written response. "In the interview I was informed I would have a company car to drive client. My insurance provider has instructed me not to drive clients in my personal vehicle, for liability purposes.
  7. Thank you for considering me. I have already committed to another assignment, planned in advance.
  8. Any admin that would ask you to do this, would just as readily throw u under the bus for any error. They do not value nurses. They never should have asked you to do this. Good for you. You need to protect your license. Also one you say yes, it will be repeated and expect you to always say yes.
  9. Congratulations on pursuing a dream. Being a CNA or LPN will give you tremendous insight and practical experience to decide if this is for you. LPN 's have less liability and are usually not allowed to care for unstable patients. There are also tons of LPN to RN programs if you decide to continue. Many employers will offer tuition assistance as you will be a pipeline employee. I went to nursing school ( ABSN) at 51, loved it , am so glad I made the leap. Nurses also work in clinics, drugstores, think assessments and immunizations, cosmetic procedure companies/ spas, blood donor sites, schools are an obvious choice with the day work, no holidays, weekends and summers off . It does take commitment. Opportunities are endless.
  10. nothing new here ..... 1. safe staffing has to be paramount, every piece of research available states that more nurses improve pt. care and satisfaction, reduce errors and falls. The research is clear enough for a middle school student to comprehend. 2. Pay - hospitals keep hiring travelers b/c it is cheaper; 1/2 staff compensation is benefits. Hospitals think they will make agency nurses work in unsafe situations, they fire at will. Hospitals break contracts with 1 week notice if that. Most MDs has been contractors for decades, not hospital employees, b/c it is cheaper. 3. There is no RN shortage, just shortage of RNs willing to work for way too little money, no respect, and unfair treatment .
  11. She was scapegoated by the corporate hospital, following their instructions!! They should have paid for the death, not her. She was not just fighting for herself, but exposed how corporate hospitals literally "get away with murder" . The hospital CEO did not give up any of their multimillion dollar compensation.
  12. DO YOUR CLINICALS IN FLORIDA, seriously
  13. Good for you for speaking up !! Managers get so far away from the real wrk that they can be clueless. A job is not indentured servitude. I have stood up to A-hole managers at my hospital a few times. Everyone else was afraid to step into their path, sure they would be fired. I was able to get more resources, safer staffing, and they no longer nitpick at me for stupid incidentals.

That is BS. They are bullies and liars. While every state is different, O2 is usually RN judgement, even EMTs can admin oxygen without an order. EKG is standard operating procedure for chest pain. Some places doc won't come until EKG is complete. Was the The MD trying to cover up their "delay of response, aka care"? If your DON is is a trusted professional, communicate to them that this happened. Ask for specific protocol on EKG and how long you 'must wait' for response before stat page.
  15. It is true that schools are creating programs as quickly as possible to improve their profits; which means some schools are hiring less than qualified faculty and clinical instructors, and accepting all applicants. Employers generally know which schools produce nurses with solid skills. What about nursing homes to get bedside experience ? Usually not dream jobs, but help you learn to manage time, perform basic assessments, gain experience with charting and common medications.
  16. There is autonomy. I.e. Parents who do not want to vaccinate can homeschool , you do not have to go to the hospital and subject yourself to science and public health measures, when you are sick, that's a choice. The autonomy to reject science and/or public health, while living in a community, includes the responsibility to agree not to endanger others. This means not using public services that require in person contact. It is quite simple.
  17. One more piece of equipment that I need to hold onto, that can potentially transmit pathogens..... No thanks. They want to know where I am, any admin is very welcome to follow me throughout the shift, but they will need to keep up.
  18. One significant thing on this list is : as school nurse, I am it! There is no back up. Countless times in the hospital I have asked another nurse for a second opinion I.e. Vitals, ekg are okay but something is not right , he does not look good.... there is no second opinion at school. If student is injured in playground , is it really bad enough to go to E.R. ? Can parent go to urgent Care, which would be faster? , Why won't that parent answer their phone or call back ? Just Me.
  19. As all floor nurses know, we are being directed to take shortcuts, process more patients, provide less nursing care, and document more. The system was set up to fail. The hospital knew that. They scapegoated this nurse. How many hours had she been working without a break ? How much overtime had she done in the last 2 weeks, and how much by force? Nobody is perfect, that is why there are supposed to be safeguards. The hospital didn't just ignore these , they counteracted them, then instructed the nurses to override. This nurse is just the one who was caught. And make no mistake there are more nurse prosecutions coming... the war on women has escalated.
  20. Absolutely you are not too old . I became a nurse at 52, I love it. I do med/surg and it is exhausting, but I have no regrets. You do not necessarily need hospital experience if you really want to be a school nurse. School systems pay 1/3 less than hospitals typically, but the schedule is great. I also sub in the school system. Larger schools may have 2 -3 nurses. Often you have an admin team on call anytime you need them. Try subbing in a school systems and see what you think.
  21. From Boston Business Journal The collective compensation for the highest paid hospital leaders in Massachusetts rose 95% over five years, with 12 of the executives reporting compensation over $2 million in the most recently available year. In the most recent year for which compensation data are available, the 12 highest-compensated hospital and health system executives in Massachusetts received $35.2 million, a $17.1 million increase from what those same executives earned in 2013. The average salary for a Physician is $266579 per year in Massachusetts. MDS are essential diagnosticians to the team – yes . Nurses died from COVID at much higher rates than any other health care provider. CEOs never risk their health for patient care. MDs have limited contact with patients. Neither group works EO weekend, cleans up what we do or holds hands of the dying. RN salaries are so far below market value.
  22. It was incredibly scary in the beginning. People showed up at the hospital just to to die. Information changed weekly, it was impossible to keep up. All of a sudden wearing several layers of PPE, having to reuse it for days, was awful. Decontamination at he end of the shift added unpaid time to my day. My biggest worry was I endangering my family's health ? I chose this career they did not. When people say thank you 1:1, I say you are welcome and move on. If I am in line waiting I say, thank you for the sentiment, you too have the power to save lives, if you wear a mask.
  23. They can demand a note from your provider specifying your restrictions. They could then ask fora second opinion. THEY CANNOT DEMAND access to your medical records. This is something else entirely. Hopefully your attorney will start procedings promptly to stop the intimidation.
  24. 1. I start off by reminding parents this is the mandate from the state and CDC. 2. I try to impress upon them that the risk may be low but the consequences are very high. Do they make their child wear a seatbelt, even though they think they are a good driver...... yes, because consequences are high. By the time you realize you need the seatbelt or quarantine, you cannot go back and change it. 3. Do they complain when I send the notice home about pediculosis or cimicosis? The inconvenience of prevention is much less than the inconvenience of effective treatment.
  25. Talk to hospital ombudsmen in confidence, or a personal attorney, get it on record that you think you need the orientation you were promised in order to keep everyone safe. This will help to protect your license. A facility that will throw you in anywhere is not patient centered and would probably not hesitate to throw you under the bus, if there is an unfortunate incident.
