Is it to late for me to become a Nurse?
I'm 34 & I just graduated, I still have to go back for my BSN. I had a lot of younger classmates, but there were also some that ranged from 5-20 yrs older than I am (males included). Good luck!

Stupid things said by your non-nurse significant other
I'm still in the process of reading this thread. Some of these are hysterical! I'm a new grad, but have been a PCT on night shift for the last few years. One night a pt (approx. 40 y/o) put on his call light at about 0300-0400. So I go into his room to see what he needed. First words outta his mouth... "I didn't wake you up, did I?" *sigh*

Anyone pass with answering all 265?
I personally know 4 people that got all the questions, & passed. So it's a possibility for sure. Good luck!

Took my NCLEX today...
I felt like I prepared, but still didn't feel ready, wondered if I prepped enough. I had to post because I took the NCLEX today & I also got 78 questions. Content seems to be very similar to yours, I also had one with ranges provided... I thought I was bombing at that point. I did the Pearson Vue trick when I got home & I got the good pop up... so here's hoping. Congrats to you! I thought 78 was a strange number, & wasn't sure what to think. Still not sure what to think, but you've given me a little hope. Can't wait until Friday to find out for sure!

having a dog while in nursing school?
aww, I am sorry about Sophie. We have a 15 y/o beagle (hubby's dog that mostly sleeps). Hubby helps me out by letting him out early & we also keep him in an area that's easy to clean up if he were to have an accident. I live close to school & most of my clinical sites, so if it's nice out I leave him outside in the yard w/a big bowl of water, fresh air helps gives him a boost of spunk. If it unexpectedly rains, he can go under the porch & hide out. My cat is actually more demanding of my time. lol. I rescued him when he was only weeks old & he's been my boss ever since. He's laying on my lap/arm as I type this. He's a loyal kitty though, pulls all-nighters with me all the time. :) Cat is strictly indoors, I occasionally take him out to the yard to explore/eat grass, but that's about it.

Do you have a home office for school? What's your system?
I more or less took over the computer room, thanks to a very accommodating hubby. I have a large desk w/a hutch (for important books) & a big bookcase on the other wall. There's a TV in here, but I am pretty good about focusing. The lighting is good too, plus hubby bought me one of those banker lamps for late nights. I also have an ottoman so I can put up my feet when reading. I painted it a light tan & decorated with a US history theme... I like feeling like I am among great thinkers. After school is done, books will all be put away/sold & I will still have a nice room.

NEED SOME FEEDBACK!
Doh - I meant humble, 'honest' was stuck in my head from reading the post above (JMVHO).

NEED SOME FEEDBACK!
In my opinion & in my honest opinion. :)

Anyone else going to be bored this summer?
I am going to enjoy my break too! I have a wonderful hubby that deserves some undivided attention for being so awesome! I plan on being outdoors, 'playing in the yard' & doing lots of birding. I'm sure I'll read a bit. I'll be working too, but only part time.

Student Uniform - My Gosh!
How awful! I couldn't function in that! If this for real, you most definately have my sympathies. We have a navy blue scrub top (w/school patch) w/white pants.

Furious....abandoned by my TEACHER....
Oh my gosh...Susan Boyle is one of my new inspirations! "I've never been given the chance" & when she got her chance she did "rock the audience", but she did it for herself... that's what I liked about her. She was Grace under fire...with an *amazing* voice! I'm sorry that happened to you (feeling like you were abandoned), but I am happy that you were able to think on your feet & make things happen! That has to give you a boost in confidence. You can help you pt when it matters most, you didn't freeze! If I am ever in a situation like yours I pray that I'll be able to react the way you did..."real world" experience. Well done!

Information not sticking
Agree w/flash cards. I re-write a lot of info & key points from the powerpoints or from the chapters. Repetition not only helps me remember, but the process sticks & it helps to work through a question. Also taking breaks to process info helps me...usually about 15 minutes or so & then I go on to another section. I record my lectures & listen to them on my ipod sometimes in the evening, but usually when I am going to bed & in the car. It's also best to look up words.terms that you don't understand right away. Make a note or * next to them in a different color or highlight & look them up or ask the instructor ASAP.

Phlebotomy before RN
No I'm not...I'm in III... just wanted to clarify. I have no idea why I typed that I was in II...

what is the most important thing in preparing the family for nursing school
lol... it's the truth, you're not kidding at all! I had to remind the hubby of that just this morning when I was running around the house like a crazy woman trying to get out of the house on time today (& by on time I mean 30 minutes early). The look on his face was priceless... I muttered something along the lines of "I'll be normal again one day, I promise."

Phlebotomy before RN
I took a phlebotomy class after I got my CNA so I could a job at a hospital while in NS. They really didn't cover much about EKG's, we kinda blew past it, but focused on blood draws. It was helpful in the aspect that I am really good at drawing blood, but not helpful in NS. I learned how to DO an EKG via OJT, but haven't learned how to really interpret them yet...that probably happen in advanced Med/Surg. I'm in Med Surg II right now... my advice would be focus on Fluids/Electrolytes/ABG's, this was an issue for many people. Also, review A&P...it'll help you in patho. Good luck!

Passing out in the OR
Last week was my first time in the OR & I was not grossed out, ate breakfast & everything. I too found myself getting very light-headed... it was the mask for sure, I almost went down, but didn't. I quickly backed myself into the corner & crouched low, turned my head into the corner, lifted the mask a little & took a few deep breaths. All of a sudden I heard "are you ok?" lol I was fine, but embarrassed! Everyone was very nice about it, they shared stories about when it happened to them, or other people watching (not just NS either, med students, new surgeons, etc.). Took me only a few moments to regain composure, but I didn't need to step out. My nose was a bit stuffy that morning, so I know I was breathing through my mouth a lot, try not to do that if possible! So yes, it happens MORE often than not. Sorry they weren't more understanding.

Would you "Facebook Friend" a Professor?
yep, you can add groups. Group A can see all posts, pics, make posts etc... group B cannot. You can post a note to your knitting club (I don't knit, just an example) & your schoolmates won't even know it's there. There's a neat permissions blog on FB, I think it's called 10 things you should know about FB. I'll try & find the link again if I can... and old grade school friend shared it with us all. You can even block your friends from tagging you in a photo that everyone can see. To answer the question, I personally would not. I would keep an email address handy to ask for references in the future, but not on a social networking site, even after I graduated.

Has any one felt like quiting
It's gotta be normal. I'm in 2nd semester (med/surg) It can be so overwhelming! I think when all is said & done I will need both psych & GI consult! :) I've had friends & family members that are nurses say they wouldn't trade places w/me for money, because they remember how rough it is. I hope to make it through this to the light & the end of a tunnel & be the one encouraging other students to keep chipping away at it & get what they want, like so many close to me & the posts on here have done for me. The day we turned in our apps was the point of no return, we had already done a lot of work just getting in! Keep on trucking & don't give up!

"Is it ok if the student stays in the room?" <-- ARRG
I don't think it would bother me. I've been asked my doctor if it is ok if a med student sits in when I am the pt. I haven't heard anyone ask if I can stay in the room, but *I* have asked if I may stay in the room, or accompany them to therapy, or whatever.

IPod and lecture question
I have a 3rd gen Ipod Nano & an olympus digital recorder. What I do is convert the wave files to .m4a via SWITCH (free online converter program) & drop them into my folder in itunes/ipod. That can be an option is you have separate technology.

First day tomorrow - nervous wreck
I go back tomorrow too. It'll be my 2nd semester though, so while I am not as nervous as last semester, I still have a certain level of anxiety. Good luck on your first day everyone, you will do great!
