Prior Service, In search of advice.

Published

Hello everyone,

I am currently taking prerequisites for my nursing program. I am interested in going into the navy nurse corp; however, I have some problems that stand in my way. I was prior service army. I was discharged under honorable conditions. But I have a enlistment code of RE-3. During my time in the service I was having some family issues, took a turn for the worst and had a nervous breakdown. So my paperwork now says "Medically unfit for retention". It has been over a year and a half since I was discharged. I have an appointment with a naval officer recruiter in a few days to talk about my options. But before then I would really appreciate it if I could have some advice from other members on this forum on what is the appropriate course of action. What should I do in order to help me gain a better chance in being accepted into the navy. Thank you all for time. I sincerely do appreciate everyone's advice.

Right now it will be diffucult to get a waiver with the drawdown in the military. You will need to have a MH eval stating that you are fit for military duty. All I can say is be up front with the recruiter, don't take no as the 1st answer, find out what you need to do to get a wavier.

I am sorry if this sounds somewhat stupid. But what is the process for the MH eval? Would I have to go get one myself from a civilian psychiatrist?

It would be best if you get one your self before you go to MEPS. If you don't MEPS should set one up for you if you get that far.
