Perioperative hypothermia may result in serious cardiac, coagulation, and wound-healing complications, especially among vulnerable pediatric and elderlypatients. More than 50 reports have been submittedthrough PA-PSRS about patients experiencingperioperative hypothermia. Many reports involvedhypothermia that was detected in the postanesthesiacare unit. Only a few reports indicated that measureswere in place to prevent hypothermia. Risk reductionstrategies to prevent perioperative hypothermiainclude assessing the patient for increased risk ofhypothermia, monitoring temperature throughout theperioperative period using optimal temperature monitoringsites, and using active and/or passive warmingmeasures as appropriate. (Pa Patient Saf Advis 2008Jun;5[2]:44-52.)
