The company I work for is telling people to take this engagement survey and are pretty serious about peomoting it. They historically have not listened to the feedback. Why are they promoting this so hard? What does it get them?

I assume this is an employee engagement survey? Sometimes there are metrics tied to percentage of survey response (I.e. individual managers may be 'graded' based on how many of their direct reports responded to the survey - greater percentage of surveys completed = more engaged staff). While I understand people's apathy to these surveys, and the sense that nothing ever comes of it, I can tell you that individual managers DO look at these survey responses and try to do better as a result. For example, one of the items that scored low for the people who I lead was "This organization provides opportunities for growth." As a result of that, I now make an effort of at least monthly, seeking out and sharing with staff inservices and learning opportunities that the organization offers. So I get the feeling of "Why bother?" I urge you to take 10 minutes and do it anyway.
