Presentation Idea/Programs Related To community Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

Im a third year student doing my community nursing placement at a detention centre and one of my assignment is to formulate a learning plan. In this learning plan the focus should be community health nursing such as health promotion etc and I have to have evidence for this learning plan. Because of security reasons I would not be able to have presentations or seminars with the inmates and as such I was planning to do a presentation to the health care staff of the facility. My only problem is I havent got a clue as to what to do in terms of health promotion/ community nursing related idea I can present to the staff. If there are any students that was placed in a detention centre/jail can you please share your experiences and what you did. Also if your a nurse at a detention centre I would like to know your opinions too. This whole project has been stressing me out and I just cant think of any idea that i can focus on. Also, I dont neccessarily have to present, I can also make a bulletin board or brochures that I can give to the Correctional officers but again im not sure what to write on since the officers are well trained.....any ideas is appreciated thank you.

one of the first things i would do is talk with the staff and their supervisors and managers and ask for input from them regarding what subjects might be of interest. having been a head nurse i know that i was always looking for continuing education opportunities to offer to the staff. so, between you and the manager there may be a way for the two of you to kill two birds with one stone.

After nurses are licensed they generally have to have a certain number of continuing education hours per year to renew their licenses. Here in California we have to have 30 hours every 2 years. Many employers also have a continuing education requirement as well also. This is addressed with each yearly employee evaluation. We helped employees fulfill this by having inservices for them.

I'm looking for ideas that I can present to the staff or projects that I can do with a focus on community nursing, the information above regarding continuing education is not possible for me. Any other suggestions? Any students here that had a placement in a detention centre?
