Prereq's for Accelerated BSN

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I currently have my BA in English and I'm interested in getting into an Accelerated BSN program... the frustrating thing is that it seems that every school has different prerequisite requirements...I've taken A&P I, II and Microbiology. I also have general sociology, general psychology and statistics from undergrad...Anyone know any schools that are ONLY requiring these prereq's for their Accelerated BSN programs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You and I are in the exact same boat. I have a BA in Mass Comm. I've done a lot of research and received info packets from a ton of accelerated BSN programs across the country. Off the top of my head I can tell you that these schools require what you have named, and maybe one or two additional classes:

Blessing-Rieman School of Nursing - Quincy, IL

Misericordia University - Dallas, Pa.

Case Western University - Cleveland, Oh.

Union University - Jackson, Tn.

I'm not sure how big you are on moving, but you may want to check out their websites and request some info like I did. One difference I have noticed is that Misericordia requires Bacteriology. Is this the same thing as Pathophysiology? Just curious. Anyway, good luck to you and let me know your thoughts. It's cool that someone else is in the same stage of planning as I am!

what about chemistry? I had to take inorganic and organic :uhoh3: to get in my accel program. I had a BA in Psych so I had all that liberal arts stuff.

I go to California State University in Long Beach, CA.

I'm thinking about applying there! Do you like it? Was it pretty competitive to get into?

It is more competitive now..I began in sept 2004, graduate this december. they accepted 36 in my class. Now they are making the critical thinking test a requirement..you have to get a certain grade. we did not, it was based on GPA.

I don't LOVE it, since the program is new (we are the second class in this program) but it gets me in and out of school fast, and that is what I wanted.

You can't work, just so you are aware. I had visions of working part time or weekends, but it really is a full time job. Clincials are on Saturdays often, too.

If you can hack the schedule (6 week long classes, schedule changes every 6 weeks) and not working (loans, loans, loans) then do it. feel free to private msg me if you have more questions.

best of luck to you!

Jen

Hi,

I am starting the Accelerated program at Research College (through Rockhurst College) in August. It is located in Kansas City, MO. Here are the prereq's for this program:

Principles of General Chemistry * (minimum grade of B required) 4 hours

Anatomy and Physiology * (minimum grade of B required) 6

Microbiology * (minimum grade of B required) 4

General Psychology 3

Developmental Psychology 3

Introduction to Sociology 3

Theology (not course specific) 6 hours

Philosophy (not course specific) 6

Humanities and Liberal Arts (English Composition, Literature, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, History and Communications) 18

Electives (Science, Social Science, Computer Science) 6

Other electives 7

Total 66

The reason I chose this school is that they have a nice tuition-reimbursement plan- if you sign a contract to work with a hospital for two years after graduation, they pay for your school (including the prereq's you take at Rockhurst- 15 hours worth). If you don't honor the contract (which I won't be), then they only make you pay back HALF of your tuition. It's a little loop hole in their system - for tax purposes, they declare half of your tuition a scholarship.

Good luck finding a school!

have you looked into any accellerated adn programs? my cousin will finish hers in 18 months (she already had a b.a. in political science.. or is that a b.s.? since it has science? i'm not sure), and they only required a&p 1&2, micro, and nutrition... Really competitive and good program, too (the school had a 100% nclex pass rate last year)... but extremely challenging. A nurse I know who works with many nursing students from different programs in the area said that out of all of them-- adn, bsn, and entry-msn-- the nurses coming in from that specific school's adn program are the best-prepared clinically.

Bacteriology is the same thing as microbiology.

I'm starting there in August 06.

As for prereq's...I have a BS in biology (pre-med focus) and now I have to go back and take more humanities classes. It's somewhat odd that nursing programs require more humanties but less science.

Generally as a nurse, I believe that patient advocacy/interaction/care/etc. is one of the major parts of your job... even if you become a nurse practitioner, it's one of the basic foundations of the practice.. So even though nursing school and medical school deal with related things, they take different approaches towards dealing with them...
