Preperation for becoming a School Nurse

Published

Hello All!

I am hoping someone where wil be able to give me some advice! I am a registered nurse and I have a year experience in an ICU Stepdown. Currently, I work at Miami Dade Area Health Education Center (AHEC), as a health education coordinator. I am also working on my Master's in Public Health (Health Promotion, Disease Prevention). I have always been interested in school nursing. I have a year of school left and I was wondering if you could give me any suggestions on how to better my chances or prepare to apply for school nursing jobs? I'm not sure which state I want to work in yet. I know jobs are pretty limited! I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

Your best bet is to apply at a few local districts or districts you'd like to work for to be a sub school nurse. Districts are always hiring and if they get comfortable with you, you're in! It may be difficult for you to sub very much based on your current job, but see what you can do.

Also - be sure you know what the requirements to be a school nurse are in your state. Some require certification specifically as a school nurse (like a teacher certification type thing, not necessarily the national certification of school nursing). There are some schools that offer school nursing courses online - this may also behoove you.

Check to see even how school nursing is delivered in your area. Your credentials would be welcome in many parts of the country, but in Florida, often times the school nurse is an LPN - so check and see what the local delivery model is.
