Preparing for pharm

Published

So I'd like to start preparing for pharmacology early because I already know it's just copious amounts of memorization.

Does anyone have any good recommendations of websites, books, or even applications for my phone that will help me get started?

What about the "need to know" topics?

I'm sure I'll need to know brand name, generic name, how it works, when to use it....

Is there anything else?

I would start by learning the different classes of drugs and learn to recognize them by how the generic name is spelled.

For example: beta blockers typically end in "lol".

This is to help you recognize them when you see them.

Then learn what drugs in this class do, how they do it, side effects, etc. etc.

I'm telling you to learn by class and not by trying to learn one drug at a time because it won't work... lol... trust me.

Also, just get familiar, specifically, with very very common drugs like acetaminophen and aspirin, just to name two.

You can do a search on AN for the list of the most common drugs you will see.

Can you get your pharm book yet?

I'm sure your pharm text will help.

If not, go to the bookstore and pick something up. Just peruse through them and see what seems to present pharm in a way that appeals to you.

Get one with a CD of quizzes.

Get a workbook.

Try googling for med quizzes or what ever you think to google. I know I have found decent quizzes.

Try LearningNurse.com.

I loved my Davis Drug Guide. It was my "bible".

Hope some of this helps.
