Preparing for ED Preceptorship

Published

Hello everyone

I am at the end of the nursing program and just got my preceptorship assignment today. I am very excited that it will be in the ED, however, I am a bit nervous as well. Would anyone have a minute to share any thoughts or suggestions that would help me to prepare for/ maximize my experience in the ED?

All input is very much appreciated.

Fun! Don't be afraid to ask if there's something you can do. To get a good idea of how things work, think hard about what the RN is doing and why. Think about the rationales. Ask questions when it's appropriate. Don't get caught up thinking about only one or two patients. Try to think about all of the patients your RN has at the same time and how you would prioritize stat orders and routine ones like VS.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply.

Don't forget to keep your eyes open, wide open. ER nurses are famous for multi- tasking, we do a lot of stuff with a lot of people, we keep mental notes, and chart things later! This is how we get through our day! We not only take care of our patients , we take care of any patient that comes through the door. Good luck!
