I'd recommend taking a practice exam and seeing how you do. You can then determine how much studying you need to do to get to the range you want your scores to be in. Keep studying and taking practice tests until your practice tests are where you want them to be. The prep courses are around $1,000 so I'd either take one of those to be safe or you can easily spend less than half that from just being practice tests and books.
Don't buy books, check them out from your local library...who cares if they are last years edition
I took a few months to prepare, pecked away at it for an hour a night....I mainly focused on math since I really suck at it; I did the entire Kaplan GRE math review book (it was like the 2004 ed or something)
I would advise you to do as many computer practice tests/quizzes as you can to get used to the format and time limit. Again, check out books from the library, they all come with CDs that simulate the test.
I got 1350 on the GRE.
edit: don't spend money if you don't have to; its not worth it..theres plenty of free stuff out there in libraries; once you take the test you don't want $1000 worth of materials that you'll never look at again...most schools are just looking for a score >1000

How much prep/studying would you recommend before taking the GRE? Or is it best to just be familiar with the style of the test and rely on your knowledge that already exists?
