GUESS WHAT!!!!
I just found out last night that I will be starting with the September 1st Cohort at Western Governors University in Daytona Beach FL! I can't wait to start, but am a little anxious as to what the classes will be like. I'm hoping to use this thread to connect with others of this class (I think there are only 10 of us all together) or others already in the program at this location.
I have also read many threads full of questions asking what this program is like, with very few answers from current students/alumni. I plan to keep this thread updated on my experience and answer any questions that potential students may have. As the program is still quite small, it is hard to find an alum out there to talk with, especially one from a specific location. I want to be a resource for others to learn about the program as I am going through it. I know that WGU offers the pre-licensure BSN in a few different states, and I'm sure one's experience could vary greatly between different locations.
Also, if you already attend WGU at any location and could offer any advice for someone just starting, like me, that would be GREAT APPRECIATED!

Great job! I'm hoping to get into the WGU nursing program too, but I did complete a WGU degree already in Business - IT Management. It's absolutely a wonderful school, with a very unique format which is why I want to come back for more!
If it's the same as the business school, you will be given the same material as you use in a traditional school, however, there is no structured deadline for submitting assignments, aside from 'by the end of your term.' That means there is no week 1 assignment, week 2 assignment, week 3 assignment, homework, etc." Classes are broken into "Objective" classes and "Performance" classes.
You get to take a pre-assessment up to 3 times for all objective classes and then you can test out of once you feel confident with the material by completing the Objective Assessment. If the cut score is 51% and you make a 52% on the test, you've just passed the class. If you get a 50%, don't worry, you get a couple more times to try it! keep failling the test though, and they'll start charging you to take it.
In performance classes, you pass the class by completing, submitting, and passing a set number of written papers like essays, research papers, etc. you follow a super easy to understand grading rubric, but if it gets kicked back because it's missing something from the rubric, you can simply correct it and resubmit it without penalty.
The major difference I know of between nursing and business is that Labs and clinicals need to be taken in person, hence the location requirements.
My advice to you is to take all your pre-assessments without fear for objective exam classes as soon as you gain access to them. You'll receive a breakdown on how you did in each competency, so that you know what to study and what you're already competent in!
Like I said though, I'm going off business school info, if anyone determines this information to be inaccurate due to nuances with the nursing program, please feel free to correct me.
Thanks for the insight!

Hi. Nice of you to start this discussion. I will be your classmate. Let's do this! I do not know too much but i know it's going to be very challenging. I guess we will meet at the boot camp.
I think you're right! Look forward to meeting you and the others! Have you heard what we're supposed to wear/bring to 'boot camp'?
I have not. As a matter of fact I don't have the dates yet. Hoping to find out more today. Will let you know if I am able to extract new info.
Well, no new info. I only have dates. Looks like further info will have to come from mentor. How are you preparing for it? Do you live in the Daytona area? I will be coming in from ATL.
Only preparing I've done so far is the EWB orientation. Just finally finished it yesterday. I'm supposed to hear from my enrollment advisor tomorrow. What are the dates of the boot camp? That's cool about the move from ATL, I actually live about 45 minutes from the hospital.

Do you know how many seats are left? I spoke with an enrollment advisor a couple of years ago but still needed micro. I have completed the course and have everything done including the TEAS. I just need the mentor to call me back.
Helano, I'm honestly not sure if there are still open seats or not. I would think that they've filled the seats, or they wouldn't be starting a cohort. I believe they pick 12 people altogether, including 2 alternates. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask though!
I actually just spoke with the admissions rep. I have everything ready to go so hopefully I can complete the process quickly. Best of luck on your nursing journey.
