pregnancy and medications

Can anyone recommend a good website regarding pregnancy and medication use (listing different meds and how safe they are to use during pregnancy)? I know I've seen something along those lines on this forum, but can't seem to find the thread.

Also, has anyone heard of Macrobid causing problems if taken in late pregnancy? I have a pt who is in her 39th week and just finished taking it for a UTI. I've read that women in the last month of pregnancy shouldn't take it....not sure why.

Thanks!

You can get very detailed information on almost any drug on this site, including specific details on the risk of taking the drug during pregnancy.

Thanks for the response!

I'm looking for a website that specifically addresses med use during pregnancy--I know I've seen something like this on this forum before, but I can't find the thread...

Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) is a pregnancy category B which reads "Animal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus, however, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.

OR

Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester."

Here the MotherRisk info on Macrobid:

Here's the SafeFetus page on it:

I see that it says it can raise the risk of hemolytic anemia in the newborn if taken close to term, also not to take it if there is suspected G6PD Deficiency (a rare genetic problem). So apparently it is a "B" until late in pregnancy, when it becomes a "D". Maybe your friend should discuss it with her doctor to see if there was a reason he felt the benefits outweighed the risks for her particular situation.

Thank you so much for your response! What a help!

Actually, it was Dr. Hale's site that I was looking for, and I found it on the recommended reading sticky. But thank you for all these other wonderful resources...

Much appreciated! :p
