Hello,
I am in the final year of nursing school about to apply for my preceptorship. Does anyone have ideas about precepting in oncology? Everyone in school recommends doing med/surge. Is med/surge a prerequisite to oncology? Thank you for your time :)

I did my preceptorship in oncology and it was an awesome experience. More critical than your typical med/surg pts yet most are still very talkie/walkie so you can converse (unlike many ICU pts) so it was the perfect mix for me. Good luck!

I did my preceptorship in oncology and work on that same unit now. We have a mix of med surg overflow, oncology patients and inpatient hospice patients. Locally, I don't know about elsewhere but here you have to have this experience for 2 years before you can work at a place that only deals with delivering chemo at an outpatient chemo facility or an inpatient cancer treatment center. Is this your eventual goal?
Thank you for the feedback. @ Noble, your type of floor sounds like exactly what I am looking for right now. A diversity of patients as well as a larger number of CA patients. I am hoping to start there and see where it goes!
