I am in my final preceptorship and have two preceptors. One I have for the majority of my shifts and is super helpful/understanding, and pushes me each day.
My other preceptor is a great nurse, but her teaching style is...frustrating. While I understand I only have her for three shifts, she makes me very nervous, Her mood fluctuates from hour to hour (one hour she is laughing and understanding and the next she is frustrated with me while she sits at her desk and plays games). What worries me is that she has made comments like, "I have had students in the past and it has been a disaster, I understand if you don't want me to be your preceptor", and, "I was expecting more from you". These comments also come after one shift with her early into the preceptorship.
My school has stated that they are low on preceptors this year and cannot move people around to other preceptors easily. Also, the school wants me to rely on communication techniques taught in class (they aren't working). The instructors say they are available anytime by phone and would rather students call them before a situation gets worse. I would talk to my instructors, but I feel like there is nothing they can do.
I am a very understanding person and want to learn a lot! Sometimes I feel like I ask too many questions, but I just want to know the acute care system so that when I am working (hopefully), I can be really sufficient. I always research my patients and medications (before giving them), and perform applicable assessments. I usually ask my preceptor to look over my charting to make sure I haven't missed anything. I just really want to learn a lot and really solidify my skills in my remaining couple weeks!
I just feel really stressed that I have to see this preceptor again (even if it is for two more shifts).
Is there any suggestions for the remaining two shifts with this preceptor?
Thanks in advance!
