Has anyone else taken Clep a test?

After some contemplation, I have decided to get a refund for my calculus class and just take the CLEP test for it. Not only will I get my $500 dollars back, but I will see the score immediately following the test. My biggest worries now are my professor who is hours away from me and the Univ. of Tennessee distance program. Both are terribly slow in moving my work along. I sent in 4 assignments and I have gotten none back. To take my final exam, I have to have all of them graded, but they don't have to be returned to me though, just graded. I still don't get it but I have to mail the assignments to Knoxville to the Univ of TN and they mail it to the professor. It would be way quicker if it was sent directly obviously. At this rate, I don't think I'll get all my assignments graded seeing how I haven't gotten any back yet at all. So, like I said, I'm taking the CLEP. It's just forty five questions long and multiple choice, so I at least ge the benefit of guessing at the end if needed and I only need to get a 50 out of a scale of 20-80. I know I can do this, but the only thing that worries me is the fact we can't use a calculator. From what I'm reading, it says we can't bring one, but if needed it will be a part of the software on the computer. Does anyone know if this is true? Even if you didn't take a calculus test I'd think if they let you have one on the software on the, say algebra or another test, for certain it would be on the calculus. Pray for me please because this is my one shot at getting into Spring 2006 nursing classes.

Why are you taking calculus, that is not a pre-req for nursing?

my sister clep'd her way through a lot of her pre-requisite classes. she says that the instructions for each clep are right on. there should also be some way to access sample problems to get an idea of what they will be like. she's never done a math one, but if the instructions say no calculators and they are supplying an on line one, then that's what you will use. i believe there's one or two math websites that have on line calculators. if i recall, they appear on the screen exactly like any calculator and you just run your pointer over the specific buttons and click on them as if you were using your finger. here's one i found with a quite search for a virtual calculator. maybe you can practice on it a little before your test.

aren't there a number of different formulas that are used to work out problems in calculus? it's probably a knowledge of those that is going to be what they are testing you on.

I CLEP'd out of English Comp. I had taken English 25 years ago, but the credits didn't transfer because the school was not accredited. The exam was fairly easy for me. I did a little review, but English has always been my strength.

If you are already competent in Calculus, I'd say go for it and save some money. Be aware, however, that the credits you earn will not show up on your transcript until the end of the following semester.

Well, I found another way to get credit for this course. I emphasize the words "I found" because despite me being on the phone for about two hours long distance, no one bothered to say "Hey you can take almost any undergraduate class for credit by going to the department and asking to take it, paying $60, and getting them to approve it". This is way cheaper than $513, I paid for an independent course and I get my grade in one day. You'd think these schools would want to help you, but they all play like they don't know anything. I was just surfing around their website and came across it I called the deparment's dean and on Friday I go sign up for the test. The Lord watches over me cause no one else really seems to. Thanks for all the advice though.
