I volunteered as a patient transporter two years ago at a local hospital and ever since then I have wanted to become a nurse. I've started some of the pre-reqs, but I'd like to actually work (or volunteer again) at a hospital first to make sure it is definately what I want.
Is there a position that deals with nurses and maybe clerical at the same time? I've seen jobs titled "unit secretary", etc. Is this a good way to see if nursing is what I want? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd try an STNA (nurses aid) class and start there. Sometimes you can find free classes, but they also offer them in hospitals, and through local colleges and career centers. That would put you in the middle of the caregiving situation and you could more directly see what nursing is all about and whether you'd enjoy it without shelling out the bucks to get a degree in it before you're sure. And- most nursing programs anymore seem to require STNA certification anyway so it wouldn't be as if you were wasting your time. I'm taking a course now and it's about two months in duration.
Good luck :)

I have been in that situation before myself started out volunteering then decided to pursue nursing school. US ( unit secretary) is a good way to go. You have contact with the nurses and get a first hand view of what they see. I highly reccomend this option even while in nursing school to help burden the load. I currently work as a tech in a ER which is also a good experience. That option will be avaliable after you have completed your first clinical in school. Bottom line, get as much access to hospital enviroment as possible. This is coming from years of experience. Good luck!
