Pre-Health George Brown

Published

Hi everyone!

So it's official I am starting the Pre-Health sciences with the intention of going to the RPN program next year. Just have some questions to people who have attended this course.

Since my partner and I are going to be doing the course together, which textbooks would we be able to share? Since I know certain ones we have to have one each since they use the access codes and such right?

Any other tips from peeps could be more than welcome since we want to do super well!

Thanks again!

Hi!

I completed pre-health last year august at GBC, I believe the only books you will need to buy for 1st semester are "inquiry to life 13th ed" for biology and one for chemistry course (can't remember the name of the book) plus you will still use these books in 2nd semester for principles in anatomy and physiology and chemistry for health science respectively. Both books have access codes for online assignments, therefore if they haven't changed the courses and assignments I think both of you might need to have one for each or you can just buy one book for each courses and then buy just an access code for one person for the online assignments then share the books. 2nd semester I think the only book you going to buy is for physics.

Personally for the biology in 1st sem i bought the code which came with the etext its a little cheaper than buying the actual book but then i ended up spending money when i printed the chapters plus the code was only valid for one year. The chemistry I bought the actual book.

Good luck with the program and getting in RPN

Hi there!

Yeah I asked about buying the codes at the bookstore but they didn't seem to know anything about that? Where did you buy yours and how does it work?

Also if u don't mind me asking, our plan is to get into the RPN program by being in the top 20 of the pre-health. How realistic is that?

Did you apply to the RPN at GBC? and how is it going? :)

Thanks!

For the biology course in 1st sem, I bought the code from the actual website mcgraw-hill.com, actually after the classes has started the professor will send a link to the whole class via email that you can go direct and register if you've bought the book which comes with the code or you can just purchase the code on that website and then register in to the course. I think you guys might use the same book, the only issue I had later after purchasing the code for that bio book was printing every week the chapters & i was told that we will be using the same book for anatomy & physiology in 2nd sem so thought it would have been worth it to buy the book if I knew I was going to use it for the 2nd sem. For the chem book I bought from the GBC bookstore the actual book (comes with the code) because we used it in the 2nd sem too.

Yes you will get in to RPN if your program GPA at the end is above 3.5 plus if the competition is not very high, I completed the pre-health in august/12 and I tried to get in for Jan 2013 and my GPA was 3.5 but they didn't give me an offer because they said the competition was very high. So I got in Centennial for RPN Jan/2013 and then in May GBC contacted me that they now have a seat for me for Sep/13. So now am thinking of transferring to GBC.

Basically you just have to aim for a very high gpa

Ok good to know, yeah I guess buying would make the most sense!

It's so hard to know what to do sometimes huh? :)

Good luck and I think u'd be better off at GBC :)

Have a great year!

Thank you! Yea buying the books is better because you'll use them for both semester if its same as last year, just ask your prof. I'm in for rpn sep this year at GBC. I wish you all the best if you have any question about pre-health feel free to ask. Take care

Thanks AshuM!

I wish you luck and let's be in touch :)

I did pre-health at Durham College and completed it in 2011 (I then worked while i was pregnant, my daughter was born 2012 and my maternity leave has ended now)

I applied at Durham, Centennial and GBC. I had very high grades in pre-health and was placed on the honor role there as well.

I was wait listed at Durham, Centennial and GBC for September '13 intake.

However, i applied at two programs at Centennial, their full time and their Flex program, thankfully i was accepted into the Flex program for both September and January (September Flex was my first choice).

I would recommend applying for the Flex program as well (it's a lot less competitive than other full time programs, as i said i had good grades and on the honor roll and still wait listed! eeps!)

Anyway, i'd personally recommend applying for GBC as your first choice but i'd also throw the flex program on there as well since you can apply for multiple programs.

A friend i made in pre-health had higher grades than i did, she had GBC as her first choice and was wait listed as well but accepted into Centennial full time program (last year)

Anyway just wanted to throw that out there :)

Also, i'm curious, did you have to pay for the pre-health program or is it considered CE and it's paid for?

I didn't have to pay any additional fees to attend pre-health and Durham but had to fill out some forms for their office

Hey Mizz

Yes you do have to pay for the pre-health at GBC. I chose it because it reserves 20 places for students with the highest grades in their RPN program.

I will be applying to Cenntenial and probably some other ones too, but I am confident I can make it into GBC :)

That's great that they reserve those 20 places! Take advantage of that for sure!

I know someone who had done pre-health at GBC a few years ago and then went into RPN at GBC.

Hi guys just a question,

Today went to GBC to find out more info and stuff and was told that we need to register in the first 15 mins of the registration opening! They said the sections fill up fast! Anyone have any experience and can tell me what to do or how to do it? The reason why I'm freaking out is my gf and I want to be in the same sections together, is this hard to do?

Thanks again!

Hi CFG77,

Its not hard to do, Just check the date and time, I believe registration will be on July 22nd for PHS and RPN, only time differ. From my experience I used to log in on stuview before the actual time of registration and i'll make sure i stay active that way it stuview doesn't log me out until the time the window of registration is open (for example for me for the rpn it opens july 22nd at 1500/3pm). so for you I will suggest both of you to log in at the same time on july 22nd before the actual time of registration for PHS and just choose the section that will work for both of you, if you guys will be at the same place during registration the better, because there will be multiple blocks/section to choose. Hope that helps.
