Pre A-BSN Question

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I apply in a year for my A-BSN program at my university! I have high hopes of getting in BUT I want to SHOW that I want this. With that being said, I would like to achieve:

-Volunteering at the local hospital and free-clinic

-Showing leadership at my job

-Shadowing a Nurse Practitioner (this is what I would like to ultimately do)

-Going to a 6 week summer program to learn more about nursing and get a better perspective (Columbia has a good one)

-Getting good letters of rec.

-Obtaining a 3.45 and up

Is the shadowing an NP necessary instead of an RN?

Anyone else have any more tips I could use to have a strong application?!

Thank you!

My school wouldn't have cared about any of that, except the GPA (which would have been too low). Check with the program you're interested in to see how to best improve your chances. They're all different.

Hi,

My programs requirement is 3.2 and up. I am not saying this is too low, but from my grades, I know that I will be able to maintain a 3.5 and up.

I don't think shadowing a NP is necessary.

My school didn't look at any of these things when accepting people into the program. My school only looked at nursing prerequisites GPA, HESI, and if you transferred credits or retook any classes then it was less likely for you to be accepted.

I would talk to a counselor and see if the program even looks at these things, because I feel like most programs don't. If you want to volunteer and go to that summer camp for yourself, then go for it.

Also I would shoot for at LEAST. 3.5 GPA. Even if they start accepting GPAs of 3.2 and up, that doesn't mean you will get accepted. Nursing is competitive and 4.0s get turned down all of the time.

Best of luck
