Practicum learning objectives

Published

I'm doing my rotation on the cardiac floor and need help with thinking of at least three learning experiences and activities to achieve those objectives. I'm kind of at a stand-still and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Learning objectives are based on what you specifically feel you need to learn or work on. What you want to get out of your practicum experience. You can Google examples and how to write learning objectives.

What do you need to work on?

Are you able to recognize abnormal labs and the possible causes of abnormal labs? If not, you could state something like, "I will demonstrate an ability to analyze lab results and identify abnormal labs and state the possible causes."

Do you need to work on knowing your meds? If so, you can use something like that. Something like, "I will demonstrate an ability to state indications for use, actions, side effects, and nursing considerations of 2 new medications a day."

Can you identify adventitious breath sounds or heart murmurs? If not, you can say something like, "I will demonstrate the ability to identify the 5 areas of heart auscultation, be able to identify abnormal heart sounds, and be able to state various diseases that may cause abnormal heart sounds." Or, "I will demonstrate the ability to auscultate breath sounds, be able to identify abnormal breath sounds, and be able to state the various diseases that may cause the various abnormal and adventitious breath sounds."

How are you at reading ECG strips? If you feel you need to work on that, you can say that you will demonstrate the ability to identify cardiac rhythms, state implications of the various rhythms, and what actions you would take as a nurse based on the various rhythms.

What skills do you need to work on? Inserting IVs, hanging piggybacks, inserting Foley's, etc.

Think of what you what to get out of your experience and what you still need to work on and use that to create your learning objectives. Remember, you need SMART objectives – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timeframe.
