Can someone please explain to me if calcium causes contractions.. why does hypocalcemia causes prolonged QT intervals?

Low calcium means a reduction in the calcium gradiant, causing a lengthening of the ST segment. Remember that it is calcium released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum that enables the muscle to contract. Slow ST (contraction) means longer recovery to repolarization.
