she is the "gauntlet bearer" for creating grassroots approaches to serving the medically underserved. cynthia barnes-boyd, rn, msn, phd, faan, was named the winner of the power of nursing leadership 2005 illinois nurse leader award. as the director of the university of illinois at chicago's neighborhood initiatives program and assistant dean of community health initiatives, she has been recognized as an outstanding nurse leader who is highly influential in shaping quality health care in illinois.barnes-boyd has a passion for cultivating unique university-community partnerships focused on a vision of serving underserved local chicago communities. she has fostered such initiatives as a home-visit program for low-income mothers and infants and a health promotion education program in local african-american beauty salons.the beauty salon program has been one of barnes-boyd's favorite projects. "information is exchanged all the time at salons, and this seemed the perfect opportunity to ensure the right kind of information is being passed along," she says. "our goal is to make sure that stylists are prepared to give the right kind of health care information to their customers."
