Potential problem with new work monitor

Nurses Recovery

I just received an e-mail today from my new supervisor at work, who I informed about my monitor program last Friday. She wants to contact HAVEN, my monitoring program before I go to work on Thursday. I was hired by someone else who was just let go for reasons unknown, and he knew about my program. Now I am worried that this new monitor is going to call HAVEN, ask questions about my past, and get concerned. Is there anyway I could be fired because of this? Would it be discrimination since my job performance has been excellent? I finally thought my life was getting back in order, and now this happens.

Yes, it would be discrimination according to the ADA- an employer can only discriminate against an addict if they are currently using drugs/etoh.

Maybe the new supervisor hasn't had experience with HAVEN? Does not know what the requirements for supervising are?

I have had a few bumps like this- just when I get comfortable something comes up and I am on the edge again. I try to look at it is a test of character and a learning experience; shows me how tenuous my self esteem is... does not let me get too cocky...

Call HAVEN and speak to them about this. I was monitored by them for two years before moving to another state and transferring to another program. There is only so much they can tell your employer, and will not give unlimited access to your history. And you will also have to sign a pretty specific release form. When I was in the interview process, they gave me a written and verbal recommendation stating my drug screen history, compliance with treatment, meeting attendance, etc - basically anything that showed my foundation in recovery and ability to work as a nurse. They did NOT tell them about my using history and all the negative ramifications that went along with it. I suggest you give them a call tomorrow just to set your mind at ease.
