Portland Hospitals

Do you have a specialty in mind? If you want to work at a big academic medical center look at OHSU, but beware they in the middle of bargaining a new nursing contract and things are little messy right now. OHSU is on top of a hill above the city and parking is quite restrictive, so keep that in mind if you don't like public transportation. Level One Trauma centers are Legacy Emanuel and OHSU. We have a couple children's hospitals, Doernbecher and Randall. There are several hospital "systems" primarily being Legacy, Providence, and Kaiser which have several hospitals each both in the city and in the suburbs. Honestly pay is kind of a wash in my opinion between facilities here. Things are pretty competitive for nursing and the pay is relatively consistent between facilities. Also once you are settled with one hospital here it isn't hard to jump to another local one after a little while. There are some significant bonuses being thrown around in town right now. Kaiser is currently offering up $10,000 signing bonuses for CVICU staff.

Thanks for replying!

I initially worked neuro/telex back in Washington (didn't care for it) and moved here to Honolulu. Did two years in high acuity tele oncology and took an ICU class and have been in ICU since around October. Would be open to staying in ICU but also open to returning to tele or med surg. I'm originally from Olympia and have spent a lot of time in Portland and love it. I know some of the hospitals offer relocation but wasn't sure if that was still the case in Portland. Are there any facilities or units I should avoid?

Hello! I just accepted a job at OHSU to start this August, relocating from NY. Just be warned with ICU, they STRESS one year ICU experience for an ICU job and they mean it! My fiance has 10 months and will have 1 year by the time we actually started working there, and OHSU was giving him a difficult time because he is slightly short on the requirement.

I got offered relocation assistance from OHSU, and I also received a job offer from Providence St Vincent which offered relocation as well. I'm not sure if those are just for ICU or what. It takes a good month to get an offer, especially if you are doing phone interviews like I did. Lots of phone calls, emails, etc. Patience is key! Feel free to message me if you have questions about the application process. I interviewed for multiple units at OHSU and 1 position at Providence and ended up getting my top choice - CVICU at OHSU. Got an email from Legacy saying I was applying too far in advance (April for August start), but neither OHSU nor Providence seemed to mind.

Not yet! Tying up some loose ends here... aka getting married and doing my honeymoon before I lose my seniority for a bit at a new hospital!
